One in three people in Gaza goes without food for consecutive days, in one of the worst humanitarian crises - one that is completely manmade (via UNICEF). Starvation knows no bounds and is ravaging men, women, children, the elderly, sick, injured, and disabled, creating a medical catastrophe, a humanitarian atrocity. Translating Falasteen (Translating Falasteen (Palestine)) x The Sameer Project provided 150 hot meals of rice to the Civil Defense, ambulance drivers, and individual tents in al-Samer neighborhood in Gaza City on July 27th. Our team cooked and distributed the rice packets that feed 2-3 people, but of course during a famine, families are trying to stretch this amount even more. We hate this so, so much. Scenes of starvation and desperation. We hate that these are the conditions that the occupation has created. We hate that young boys and girls, pregnant women, the elderly, set out daily with just an empty pot and the will to feed their families. We continue to hear about massacres at aid sites. Murdering those who are trying to provide for their families. Hungry individuals just like you see in our video. They were just trying to fill their gnawing bellies. And that is how they die? There is no humanity. In an attempt to scale up our food distributions, we provided pots of hot cooked meals to multiple areas in the North. The Translating Falasteen (Translating Falasteen (Palestine)) x The Sameer Project team brought 5 Pots of cooked thick lentils to displacement camps in al-Samer area of Gaza City. Each pot of lentils costs 1,000 shekels and after 3% bank transfer charge, approximately $300 or $1,500 for this area before labor and transportation fees. In the heat and while exhausted, people wait in queues for hours for food. Sadly due to the ongoing famine, people push through to get a serving in fear of the food running out. We send extra team members to try and control the crowds and make sure no injuries happen and thank God so far, we have had no injuries. On August 1st prices were still at $17.50 per plate and we distributed 225 meals (800g per meal) at Al Katiba Camp, Konia, in Al Rimal. The total cost was $3,938 with 10% commission. With bakeries closed and aid distribution sites continuing to lure people to their deaths, communities rely on “takiyyas” to line up and receive a meal in a pot they bring with them. We supplied 4 pots of eggplant and a tomato broth at al-Fakhoura Camp, Al-Daraj neighborhood in Gaza City. Each pot contains around 43 servings and each serving is enough for about 3 people, providing 1000 calories for each meal serving. While all eyes are diverted to other serious issues in the region, Gaza is starting to feel even more abandoned than before, if that’s possible. People have stopped talking about the famine, stopped talking about the bombing, stopped talking about the death trap distribution sites, and stopped talking about the blockade of all aid. Yet people in Gaza are suffering beyond belief. They are starving! We have not slowed down, and we will never stop. Translating Falasteen (Translating Falasteen (Palestine)) x The Sameer Project continues to recognize the struggle and reacts to provide help. The team provided 10 pots of zucchini and rice in Ana Insan Camp on al-Nafaq Street as well as Duwwar al-Qawqa Camp in al-Shati’ Refugee Camp, in Gaza City. Each pot is 2,100 shekels, so nearly $625 per pot after a 3% bank transfer fee. Basic food is so expensive due to the scarcity, so these pots that fed thousands cost $6,250, which doesn’t take into account the fuel prices to transport them, or wages. When coordinating with kitchens we discuss the importance of adding spices for flavor and any vegetables available with the rice we provide. People deserve not just nutrients but also taste and joy, support: On the 26th of July, The Sameer Project x Translating Falasteen (Translating Falasteen (Palestine)) team distributed 300 meals of rice in Al Katiba camp in the universities area, in Al Rimal neighborhood in Gaza City. Each meal weighs 800 grams and costs $18.25 with 10% commission so the distribution cost around $5,475. These extremely high prices are because the goods are scarce. The amounts of rice we distribute depend on the availablity each day but your donations allow us to maximize distributions by buying everything we find. Pasta…but with a Palestinian twist, meaning cumin and other familiar, comforting spices!! Individuals in Gaza are living off of only about one meal per day. And this one meal is the same thing over and over - usually watered down lentils. So when our team brought macaroni pasta with carrots and peas and a spiced tomato sauce, everyone was relieved to have some variety. Translating Falasteen (Translating Falasteen (Palestine)) x The Sameer Project provided 8 Pots of pasta at Al-Jawazat Camp in Gaza City on June 23. Each pot cost 1,900 shekels or $577 after 3% bank transfer fees to pay the amount. This is not even including transportation and wages, which we pay in cash at a 38% cash withdrawal fee. Pasta and a tomato sauce for nearly $600 per pot!! Aid needs to enter Gaza, prices need to come down, food cannot not be weaponized for forced starvation and political objectives. Chemotherapy, radiation, even palliative care, is not available or minimally available in Gaza. Cancer patients are left to their family’s care in tents rather than in hospitals or clinics. Donate: We visited one such tent encampment where many of these cancer patients reside, batting their disease with little support and no healthy food to give them strength. Translating Falasteen (Translating Falasteen (Palestine) ) x The Sameer Project distributed 150 hot meals of rice at Cancer Patients Camp and Al-Shafi’i School in Gaza City. We provided these warm comforting meals to many of those who need the food to fight back against cancer. Supporting orphans in Gaza is a priority for the Sameer Project, donate: This is why this week we did a jacket distribution in Zaytoun neighborhood in Northern Gaza. The Translating Falasteen (Translating Falasteen (Palestine)) x Sameer Project provided 62 waterproof jackets to children with the weather getting cooler. Each jacket cost $13.65 with 11% commission. These jackets entered Gaza through the 150 trucks that enter daily. The “ceasefire” agreement stated 600 trucks a day but the military occupation didn’t comply. Less than 25% of needed goods are entering making commercial goods too expensive for most people to afford. Rice prices continue to fluctuate in the North based on the little aid that trickles in, or even from the rumor that more aid will enter. We keep up with these price changes by scouring the markets daily and speaking to traders that have bulk quantity in order to get the best deals on the best quality of rice. Each prepared tray of spiced rice feeds 2-3 people so during distributions we provide enough to cover the entire family for a meal. The team gave out 160 hot meals of rice at various displacement camps on June 14, again providing enough for each family to have a meal - often times their only meal of the day. Each tray of rice is 35 shekels or a little more than $10, making the cost of the distribution $1,937 after labor and 3% bank transfer fee to make the purchase. We are going through money fast while we carry out all our food distributions daily to supply Gaza with something to eat, help us sustain our work and donate to the Translating Falasteen (Translating Falasteen (Palestine)) x The Sameer Project North campaign. We are still serving North Gaza. People are trapped - some remaining steadfast and refusing to leave, while others cannot find or afford transport South. Those that have stayed need help to simply survive. They need food to sustain them as bombs drop around. They are starving, they are being massacred, they are being tortured in every way. On September 9, Translating Falasteen (Translating Falasteen (Palestine)) x The Sameer Project provided 1,120 meals feeding 2-3 people each for a total of $7,715. We served… -450 meals from 6 pots, including 400 at Qasr al-Mina 2 Camp in al-Rimal neighborhood in Gaza City and 50 at individual tents around the area. -450 meals, including 310 at al-Manar Camp and 140 at al-Tifl al-Zahabi Camp in Gaza City. -220 meals of to the Civil Defense, Ambulance drivers, and individual tents in Tal al-Hawa in Gaza City. While each meal costs only $5.65, it represents a chance at life, in the North, on their homeland, a chance at survival. We need to support those in the North.
