Lord of Illusions is my favourite movie by Clive Barker (born on this day in 1952). It wasn't always so. Hellraiser held that position. I saw Lord of Illusions at the cinema in 1995 and while I loved it, it didn't usurp Barker's directorial debut. At least, not right away. It was a slow process of replacement, Lord of Illusions inching its way past Hellraiser over a period of years. Lord of Illusions fuses horror and noir seamlessly, Bakula is perfectly cast and the character of Nix is truly frightening. This scene, a flashback to the disastrous 'Brooklyn exorcism' is, at just over a minute, better than any number of horror movies in their entirety.
