SAPS is expected to police taxi violence, extortion, organised crime and related disputes. A police officer cannot have a financial stake in the very industry they are meant to enforce the law against. I have written to the National Commissioner requesting urgent action. Where these allegations are proven, members must not only be disciplined and dismissed, criminal cases must be opened. They must be arrested, charged and, where the evidence supports it, convicted. We cannot overlook what is wrong simply because we support Linda Mwananchi. We must have the maturity to speak up when something is wrong and not become blind followers. The convoy situation was a mistake. If there is a better way to conduct these convoys without inconveniencing or endangering other road users, then it should be adopted. The last time I saw the convoy, there was a serious accident where a car rolled over, and there were also reports of someone being knocked by one of the vehicles. This cannot be ignored. Linda Mwananchi must do better. The movement should be about the people, and that includes respecting the safety and convenience of everyone using our roads.
