Eight engineering students from Tamil Nadu were killed when their car rammed into the rear of a parked goods lorry on the under-construction National Highway 66 at Kaipamangalam in Thrissur district of Keralam late Friday night, police said. The tragic accident occurred at Panambikkunnu Centre, claiming the lives of students from PSNA College of Engineering and Technology in Dindigul. Police said five of the deceased, Surya, Yuvasanjith, Joshua, Murali and Jeeva, were from Dindigul, while Santhosh and Prasanna were from Madurai and Vishva was from Salem. Police have informed the families of the identified victims. According to the police, the incident took place at 11.42 pm on Friday, when the Tamil Nadu-registered car, which was travelling from Guruvayur towards Kodungallur, lost control and crashed into the lorry at high speed. The Maharashtra-registered heavy vehicle was parked near a diversion on the national highway. The collision was so severe that the car was completely crushed, with its front portion wedged entirely under the lorry. The car was travelling at high speed, and the driver apparently failed to notice the diversion barricade before hitting the rear of the lorry, police said. Hearing the loud crash, residents, police and fire force personnel rushed to the spot and initiated rescue operations. The vehicle had to be cut open to extricate the passengers. Rescuers faced a daunting task, particularly in pulling out those trapped in the front seats, reflecting the sheer magnitude of the crash. All eight occupants succumbed to their injuries at the scene. Preliminary investigations suggest that the youths were on a holiday trip to Keralam. Some of the families were unaware that their children had travelled to Keralam, police said. The mortal remains will be handed over to the relatives following the post-mortem examination. Post-mortem examinations will begin after the families of the deceased reach Thrissur Medical College. Mohammad Nadeem, Thrissur Rural District Police Chief, stated that absolute negligence in parking the goods lorry led to the tragedy. Speaking to the media after visiting the accident scene, the police official made it clear that the accident was entirely the fault of the lorry driver and promised stringent legal action against those responsible. The SP confirmed that heavy vehicles are strictly prohibited from parking on the highway in this manner. Despite the restrictions, the lorry was parked with absolute negligence, directly causing the fatal crash. A criminal case has been registered against the driver, who fled the scene immediately after the accident, under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The police have successfully tracked down the owner of the lorry. "The driver fled the scene immediately after the accident. To track him down, the Thrissur Rural Police have constituted a special investigation team. The team will immediately launch search operations centred in Maharashtra to apprehend the absconding driver at the earliest. He explicitly stated that parking the lorry on the highway in this manner was not permitted, yet it was parked negligently," he added. Beyond the lorry driver, Nadeem said that the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the contractor would also be contacted regarding the tragic accident. Matters such as whether the Highway Authority had properly installed signboards in areas where construction work was ongoing will be inspected.

As anticipated, a mesoscale #vortex developed along the East–West monsoon #ShearZone near the #Palghar–#Manor region, significantly enhancing the local monsoon dynamics. 🌧️ The strengthening of this vortex resulted in a sharp pressure fall over the #Mumbai region, with mean sea-level pressure dropping to around 997 hPa. Simultaneously, strong convective winds accompanied the system, with wind gusts of up to 80 km/h reported at #CSMIA, according to #METAR observations around **10:30 AM. From a #rainfall perspective, precipitation associated with such vortices is always challenging to forecast because the heaviest rainfall often becomes highly localized and depends on the exact position and movement of the circulation. Nevertheless, as indicated in the earlier outlook, there was potential for 300 mm-plus rainfall where the vortex became anchored, and that scenario has now materialized. The most intense rainfall overnight was concentrated over the southern quadrant of Mumbai, parts of North #Raigad district, particularly #Panvel, #Khalapur, #Matheran, #Karjat, and the adjoining #Sahyadri Ghat sections, including #Khandala to #Tamhini, where extremely heavy rainfall was recorded. Following the passage of the most intense phase, rainfall has reduced to intermittent drizzle across many areas, accompanied by breezy conditions as the vortex gradually weakens. Looking ahead, #atmospheric conditions remain favourable for heavy rainfall until 7 July, with Raigad district and Mumbai currently appearing best placed for further significant rainfall. Thereafter, rainfall prospects over #Thane and Palghar districts will depend largely on the future movement and positioning of the monsoon shear zone. If the primary vortex-induced event has already peaked, these regions are likely to continue receiving generally heavy rainfall upto 250 mm may be if any, although the probability of another widespread 300 mm-plus event may reduce unless a fresh mesoscale circulation develops. #WeatherAnalysis #WeatherUpdate #KonkanWeather #Maharashtra #July #SWM2026 #Monsoon2026 #MumbaiRains

URGENT ALERT: Landslide Blocks Teesta River Near Chyakoong, Downstream Areas Placed on High Alert Mangan, September 6, 2026: A massive landslide occurred early this morning above the Chyakoong River, opposite OC Bhir in North Sikkim. Roughly half of the hillside collapsed into the gorge, temporarily blocking the flow of the Teesta River. District administration and emergency response teams were mobilised immediately after the incident. Police personnel from Chungthang Police Station and Theng Check Post were deployed to the site to monitor the stability of the affected area and the behaviour of the blocked water. Officials said water levels recorded at Sankalang and Phidang outposts remained normal in the hours after the landslide, though the river water had turned heavily turbid and muddy. Both outposts were placed on round-the-clock monitoring. Assessment teams also flagged a wider downstream risk. The landslide debris has formed a natural dam-like blockage on a river that joins the Teesta, located around 60 km upstream from Reang Kongma and 40 km upstream from Rangpo, near the West Bengal border. Officials said this could lead to increased water release from upstream, and warned that a breach of the naturally formed blockage could send a sudden surge of water downstream, first affecting the Tintek area in Sikkim before reaching parts of Kalimpong, Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri. According to sources, senior officials held discussions with officers posted downstream to prepare for possible evacuations in case of an emergency. The Police Control Room in Sikkim has been activated and high-alert has been issued warning o vulnerable habitations along the lower belt of the Teesta River basin. The public, workers, anglers and vehicle operators have been advised to stay away from the riverbed, avoid fishing, and refrain from crossing suspension bridges and footpaths along the river until further notice. People were also urged to stay updated through official channels and not to act on unverified rumours circulating on social media. The Teesta River has since resumed its flow following the temporary blockage. Authorities have confirmed this update, but have asked residents in downstream and lower belt areas to remain alert and exercise caution near the riverbanks. The public is advised to avoid going close to the river until the situation is confirmed to be completely safe. Further updates are awaited from ground assessment teams.

A postgraduate medical student from GSL Medical College is undergoing treatment on ventilator support in Hyderabad after a car allegedly driven by an intoxicated man rammed into a scooter outside Prasaditya Mall on AV Apparao Road in Rajahmundry. The incident occurred on August 3, and a video purportedly showing the crash surfaced on social media on August 6. According to Prakash Nagar police, two men, identified as S. Dasvanth and Andrew Joseph Edwards, had allegedly arrived at the mall's Saradhi Cinemas in an intoxicated state. Police said security personnel stopped them from entering after a breathalyser test reportedly confirmed alcohol consumption, following which the duo allegedly assaulted security staff before leaving for the parking area. Around the same time, GSL Medical College students Sai Umesh, a Radiology postgraduate, and Priyanka, a Dermatology postgraduate, were leaving the mall on a scooter. Police said Dasvanth, who was driving a Tata Nexon car, allegedly hit the scooter from behind twice in a rash and negligent manner. When the riders were on the main road outside the mall gate, the car allegedly struck the scooter again, causing both students to fall. The injured students were rushed to Swatantra Hospital in Rajahmundry by a passerby. While Umesh suffered a concussion, Priyanka sustained serious injuries, including a skull fracture and brain injury, and was later shifted to KIMS Hospital in Hyderabad, where she remains on ventilator support. Earlier reports claimed that the car ran over Priyanka after the collision. However, Prakash Nagar Police Station officials said this was not accurate and that the investigation was based on available evidence. Police said two FIRs have been registered in connection with the incident. A case based on Umesh's statement has been filed against Dasvanth and Edwards under Section 125(b) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Another case, based on a complaint by mall cinema manager Vijay, has been registered under sections related to alleged assault on security personnel. Police said further action, including possible addition of more serious charges, will depend on the victim's medical condition and the findings of the investigation.

Blue-Green Algae at Red Bud Isle☠️🐶 Austin, TX - Austin Watershed Protection staff have observed thick mats of blue-green algae, some of which may be toxic, notably near Red Bud Isle on Lady Bird Lake and at Walsh Boat Landing on Lake Austin. Samples were collected at all six monitoring sites on the lakes for testing. At this time of year, blue-green algae mats may be present in other parts of either lake and our creeks. Community members should be cautious and avoid contact with algae. They should keep dogs away from water with algae mats. The mats usually look like dark blobs floating on the surface and can be mixes of different kinds of algae. They may be mixed in with aquatic vegetation. As the weather continues to heat up, conditions for algae will become more favorable, and we expect to see more in our waterways. Assess Before You Enter Waterways If any of the following conditions are present, stay out of the water. They could indicate reduced water quality. •Algae along the shoreline •Stagnant, warm or murky water •Scum or surface film. In addition, do not enter the water if there has been rain in the past three days. After Entering the Water •Do not drink water directly from natural water bodies. •Avoid contact with algae. •Rinse skin, hair, and animal fur thoroughly after contact with water. •Do not allow pets to lick their fur before rinsing them off. If you or your pet experiences sudden, unexplained illness after swimming, contact your medical provider or veterinarian immediately. Residents are encouraged to report suspected human or animal illnesses related to algae using the City’s online reporting form. The mats of blue-green algae present at Red Bud Isle are similar in appearance to conditions in May and June in previous years. For the past five years, we have applied lanthanum-modified clay to manage sediment phosphorus in an effort to reduce the growth of algae as part of a $1.5 million pilot program. This year is a control year with no application so we can evaluate the effectiveness of the pilot program and whether it is beneficial to continue investing public funds at the previous level. Algae is not the only risk when spending time on Austin’s waterways. Natural water bodies can contain algae, bacteria, parasites, and other hazards. *Austin Watershed Protection

At least nine people have died after a cruise boat operated by the Madhya Pradesh tourism department capsized in Bargi Dam on the Narmada river near Jabalpur on Thursday evening. Officials said the vessel, carrying around 43 passengers including crew members, overturned after being caught in a sudden and severe storm. The weather changed abruptly around 6pm, with wind speeds reported between 60–70 kmph, creating turbulent conditions in the dam. Authorities said the high-velocity winds likely destabilised the boat, causing it to lose control and capsize. Search and rescue operations continued late into Thursday night with teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), state disaster units and local administration deployed at the site. The death toll rose to nine after additional bodies were recovered on Friday. Several survivors have alleged lapses in safety measures, claiming life jackets were distributed only after the vessel began sinking. “There were no visible safety measures during the journey. Panic broke out when the cruise started sinking, and only then were life jackets handed out,” said one survivor, Julius, who lost his wife in the incident. His daughter and grandson are still missing. Another eyewitness, Samrat, said strong winds were already visible before the capsize. “We told the boat operator to turn back, but he did not listen. The boat capsized mid-dam. We managed to rescue around 15–16 people,” he said. Officials said a detailed investigation will examine whether safety protocols were followed, including the timing of life jacket distribution and the decision to continue operations despite deteriorating weather conditions. Bargi Dam, one of the earliest major hydroelectric and irrigation projects on the Narmada, is a popular tourist site located around 40 km from Jabalpur.

A 19-year-old woman was allegedly stabbed to death by her father during a counselling session in Uttar Pradesh's Banda district after she insisted on living with a man she had married against her family's wishes, police said. The shocking incident took place in the Badousa police station area on Thursday and has triggered widespread outrage across the district. According to police, the woman had been in a relationship with a young man from her neighbourhood. On May 18, she left home with him, prompting her family to file a complaint. A case was subsequently registered and police launched a search operation to trace her. Banda Superintendent of Police Palash Bansal said the woman was found safe on June 12 and brought back as part of the legal process. Her parents were informed and were called for discussions and counselling with police officials. During the interaction, the woman reportedly maintained that she wanted to stay with her husband. Police said she had married the man after leaving home and was unwilling to return to her family despite repeated attempts by relatives and officials to persuade her otherwise. According to investigators, tensions escalated during the counselling session when her father suddenly attacked her with a sharp-edged weapon, stabbing her in the abdomen. The injured woman was rushed to the Atarra Community Health Centre and later referred to a medical college for advanced treatment. However, doctors declared her dead. SP Bansal said that based on a complaint lodged by the victim's mother, police registered a murder case against the woman's father. The accused has been taken into custody and the weapon used in the crime has been recovered. "The woman had been safely recovered and her family was informed. During counselling and discussions with her parents, her father attacked her with a sharp weapon. A case has been registered and the accused has been detained. Further legal proceedings are underway," the SP said. Police have sent the body for post-mortem examination and initiated further investigation into the case. The incident has drawn attention across Banda, with many describing it as a suspected case of honour killing. However, police have so far registered the case as murder and said further investigation will determine all circumstances leading to the killing.
