ABC News investigated and found more than 3,000 data centers are already operating nationwide At least 1,000 more planned Residents near data centers are seeing much as 50%+ increases on their electric bills “ABC7 has also been covering public meetings over proposed data centers and there are questions about water use and the environment. The i-team in ABC News studied this private company's data center map and found that there are at least 4,302 data center projects across the U.S. Large and small. Of those, 3,038 are currently operational with another 1,203 either under construction or plan for construction. 61 have acquired land. It’s fair to have concerns, but the fact 50% opposed a nuclear power plant versus 75% who opposed data centers shows something else is going on. There are natural concerns (some premised on misinformation like the fact that golf courses consume 20–30× more water than data centers), and some of it is being amplified by China. JB Pritzker has given over $1 billion in tax breaks to data centers, at one point making us the #2 state for data centers in the country (we're #4 now). All with no guardrails to protect local residents or regulate energy or water usage. So it's no surprise to see the room packed with opponents when a 3rd data center campus was being proposed in Hoffman Estates. Pritzker and Springfield failed to pause tax incentives for data centers and failed to put in place common sense regulations that ensure data centers pay all their energy costs, limit water usage, and contribute to a property tax relief fund for Illinoisans. Vote Independent in November and we will get it done.

John: There is a lot of opposition to building in America, broadly. That's just the nature of our society. I was thinking about, what do Americans want to build? Because it's easy to look at the data center stuff and be like, "Well, everyone's against building data centers." I was reflecting on the whole reindustrialization meme this weekend. And I was thinking about the actual knock-on effects of reindustrialization — most people don't want a car factory in their town. I actually think people don't really want change. They don't want things built. Data centers are probably at the bottom of the list. They're the least popular. But people don't want stuff built, generally. There are very few things that people are like, "Yeah, I'd be down for that to be built." People like the status quo. They're happy with things as they are. And they don't like change. People block home construction all the time. Also, permitting and expansion of existing homes. I'm not saying that they're as unpopular as data centers. Data centers are at the bottom. But new housing in communities is like razor's edge. I do think there's an element of like, Americans don't want to build anything.

A local utility company in Illinois has plans to help lower residents electrical bills They will be requiring new data centers and planned data centers to sign 10 year contracts saying they will be responsible for paying for upgrade costs and electricity usage costs “That means any new data centers would be on the hook for power upgrades and any energy they plan to use, even if the data center ends up not getting built or if they don't use as much power as planned or if they close. So what happened?” “What happened in the data centers is that the data centers transitioned from being primarily data storage and data transfer systems, where you would use hard drives and RAM and memory to store data and then transmit it back out, to being data processing centers because of the AI boom.” “So as AI became more important in the data center, more of the dollars that are going into data centers were allocated towards chips from data storage, which initially was hard drives.” “And then suddenly, when you put these processors in to process the data to do AI, the majority of the spend and the majority of the energy is going towards the processors.” “I made some calls and I checked around with some other friends, and everyone says the same thing: that these 7-8 year old TPUs and GPUs that are sitting in the data centers are still being used and they're being used at 100% utilization.” “So that actually justifies and validates the depreciation schedule being much longer versus shorter.”
