HOW DID IRAN BECOME MAJORITY SHIA? 🇮🇷 524 years ago today, Shah Ismail I founded the Safavid dynasty, officially declaring Twelver Shiism as the state religion of his empire. At its height, Safavid rule covered much of modern-day Iran and Azerbaijan, and at various points extended into parts of Iraq, Türkiye and Central Asia. Although Persia had historically produced some of the most celebrated Sunni Muslim scholars — including Imam al-Bukhari, al-Tabari and al-Ghazali — it was the Safavids who laid the political and religious foundations for Iran becoming the Shia-majority country it is today.

Shaykh al-Albani was a pious learned scholar who sought to create unity among Muslims. For this reason, he was diplomatic in how he spoke about Ibn Abd al-Wahhab. Before al-Albani, major scholars outside Saudi Arabia typically insulted Ibn Abd al-Wahhab as a ignorant deviant khariji at war with Ahl al-Sunna (e.g., Ibn Abidin, al-Sawi, al-San'ani, Ahmad Zayni Dahlan). Following Rashid Rida, al-Albani was much more respectful of Ibn Abd al-Wahhab because he did not want to antagonize scholars in Saudi Arabia. Nevertheless, he criticized Ibn Abd al-Wahhab's teachings on multiple occasions. He correctly states that Ibn Abd al-Wahhab is limited in knowledge - lacking in understanding of fiqh and not knowing the difference between weak and sound hadiths. He also states that Ibn Abd al-Wahhab took extremist positions in matters of aqida, leading him to mass takfir Muslims without reason. Alhamdulillah, al-Albani's sensible views influenced other Salafis scholars like Ibn Uthaymin and Uthman al-Khamis, such that they tacitly distanced themselves from Ibn Abd al-Wahhab's errors. Today, due to the influence of al-Albani and others, most Salafis do not even read the deviant works of Ibn Abd al-Wahhab. Their notion of Salafism is simply al-Albani, Bin Baz, and Ibn Uthaymin. They don't even know the names of major traditional Wahhabi scholars like Abdullah ibn Muhammad Al al-Shaykh (1752-1826), Hamad ibn Atiq (1813-1884), and Sulayman ibn Sihman (1850-1930) (that some write Sahman). They don't study the deviant books of these figures alhamdulillah. There would be no problem if all Salafis were simply followers of al-Albani, Ibn Uthaymin, and Uthman al-Khamis. However, unfortunately, among Salafis there are still significant subgroups like ISIS, Madkhalis, and other sectarians, who are still heavily influenced by Ibn Abd al-Wahhabi deviant ideas. These deviant ideas center on calling for hatred, killing, and takfir/or targeting the general Muslim masses, subjecting them to endless aqida checks in order to shun them. Groups like ISIS want to kill every Muslim outside their small group. Meanwhile, Madkhalis want to kill every Muslim who has not pledged allegiance to a Gulf dictator.

One of Pakistan's leading scholars and jurists, Shaykh al-Islam Mufti Taqi Usmani, recently delivered a speech on Iran and the issues of Sunni-Shia sectarianism. The following clip, which is in Urdu, highlights these points: (1) The US and Israel did not attack Iran because it is “Shia”, but because it is regarded as a foundational part of Islam. (2) Despite our differences, this is not the time to raise Sunni and Shia polemics. In fact, we should be united. (3) If we stand united as a Umma, then the US and Israel cannot harm us. (4) The US and Israel are doing their best to sow seeds of sectarianism and hatred between Sunnis and Shias so that we fight each other. These were some of the main points. During the Iran–Iraq war (1980–1988), the Islamic Republic of Iran, with the support and blessing of the Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khomeini, and the support of regime institutions, including state media, sent over 100,000 young boys to the battlefields. These children were used in front-line roles, including mine-clearing operations and human-wave assaults. Tens of thousands of children were killed during the Iran–Iraq war in one of the most horrific, shameful, and haunting chapters of Islamic Republic history. While Saddam Hussein started the war by invading Iran, the war went on six years longer than it had to because Ayatollah Khomeini saw the war as an ideological battle, insisting that Saddam Hussein be toppled and that it be acknowledged that Hussein started the war. Khomeini finally gave in in 1988 when he was told by his closest advisors that, after years and at least hundreds of thousands of Iranians dead, the Islamic Revolution was at risk. Khomeini infamously referred to his consent to end the war as equivalent to drinking poison — after the war ended, the regime, due to a fatwa signed by Ayatollah Khomeini, executed over 10,000 political prisoners in a matter of months. Abu Tahsin al-Salihi is an Iraqi veteran sniper who is credited with killing over 350 ISIS members during the Iraqi Civil War. In his youth, he tended sheep and carried a French rifle for protection, using it to hunt rabbits. Through this experience, he gained expertise in hunting and marksmanship. Following the eruption of the War in Iraq in late 2013 and ISIL's Northern Iraq offensive, he enlisted in the Sadr Brigade within the Popular Mobilization Forces. He actively engaged in numerous battles that led to the liberation of several provinces in Iraq. In total, he had 384 confirmed kills. This achievement earned him the nickname "Hawk Eye." al-Salihi was killed in action during the anti-ISIS offensive against Hawija in Iraq, 2017.

LIE: Salafis did not consider Bashar a disbeliever and prohibited khuruj against him. TL;DR: Salafi scholars declared Bashar and his father as disbelievers long ago and only emphasize that khuruj, like any other act of worship, be done in accordance with the shariʿah. Shaykh Falāh Al-Mundakār (رحمه الله): "Our scholars, even before Bashar, in the days of his filthy father would declare this (Syrian) government as disbelievers. This declaration means that it is permissible to go out against them. Bashar follows his father in regards to takfir and permitting khuruj... When a declaration of takfir takes place, it means khuruj is permissible, but I hope we can understand what this means. (Scholars say) A disbeliever may be gone out against (khuruj) but then say do not go out against him or protest, there is no contradiction. This is because khuruj is an issue within the shariʿah. You go out within the confines of the shariʿah — raising the statement of Allah above all and removing a disbelieving leader and replacing him with a Muslim one. There is nothing in the shariʿah whether compulsory or permissible except that it is linked to conditions. The first in in this issue (khuruj) is ability... As for not having ability, this is where they (the scholars) say do not go out against him due to incompetence, inability, and conditions not being met. When these conditions are fulfilled then bismillah (go ahead). Allah will aid and make you successful without a doubt. But if you certainly know you do not have the ability or even a tenth and the conditions are not met, do not throw the children of the Muslims or the general Muslims into these types of fitan..."
