“Make in India” is a nice slogan, but let’s start with the basics. Can India learn to build roads without potholes — like this one 👇🏼 in China? Manufacturing requires precision, quality and robust infrastructure. This is why Elon Musk has not built a Tesla factory here.

Gujarat’s Rajkot outcompetes China in kitchenware manufacturing. Make no mistake. labour-intensive sectors such as kitchenware, stainless-steel utensils, cookware, and light metal goods, manufacturing in India is now cheaper than China. Industrial clusters in Gujarat, particularly Rajkot, operate with minimal overheads, owner-managed MSMEs, dense supplier networks, and a cost structure that China can no longer match. This advantage is structural, not temporary. China’s median age is now around 40 to 41 years, while India’s is around 29 to 30 years. India has a vast and growing working-age population, with over 65 percent of its people under 35. China, by contrast, is ageing rapidly, with a shrinking labour pool and rising wage pressure. These figures matter. Manufacturing depends on manpower, flexibility, and scale at the ground level. Gujarat has it. Rajkot’s workforce allows manufacturers to scale quickly, customise orders, switch product lines, and remain profitable on small-to-mid batch exports, something Chinese factories increasingly struggle to do because of higher fixed costs and rigid production models. China still dominates fully automated mass production, but in labour-driven manufacturing, India now has the cost, demographic, and operational edge. Europe has recognised this reality. With the EU accelerating trade and industrial cooperation with India, supply chains are actively diversifying away from China toward India. This is not ideology, it is economics, risk management, and long-term planning. India is not an alternative anymore. In sectors like kitchenware and light manufacturing, India, and Gujarat in particular, is becoming the default.
