making my threejs / webgpu star renderer (planetarium?) more of a real thing. renders 44 million stars from the gaia star catalog at 120 fps. there's no LOD/culling. every star in frame is drawn. next is adding a nice API for agents to write "tours" that play automatically

Have you ever played this game?

hmm it looks pretty familiar but I'm not sure. I've played a lot of these escape-velocity-likes

could a ceiling projector be made?? for sleeping at night

I do think this would work pretty well for that.

its just so cool... im imagining a phone linked to a projector that points at ceiling. limitless fun basically

I don't understand how 44m stars can be rendered in, even as dots lol. Hmm. Maybe mine is slow because of origin shifting causing performance to dip, idk.

Crazy stuff Maybe this is what astral projection feels like

Why does mine run at 30 fps with minimum star quantity

smol gpu?

🥲

At this point, just make a port of star citizen. Very cool work!

It gets oversaturated when zoomed out. Are you familiar with datashader? It's Python's lib but worth checking out. It also supports interactive rendering of large datasets (hundreds of millions to billions)

It would be more impressive if there was LOD or culling.

well that's definitely not true. it would be trivial to add. it's even already there in the form of a slider. but tying it to zoom level would defeat the point of the entire project

wow

woa OoO

dyson sphere program.......

Jesus, nice

javascript users discover gpu instancing

Very cool! You should add the extinction maps as well.

this kind of has them built in. the gaia luminosity is based on how they look from earth, so the dust is basically baked into the gaia data

wow

bro amazing

that's a whole lotta stars O _ O

very like, thank you

are there aliens?

holy shit dude WHAT

The fuck? No culling? O.O Okay....actually...hold on...that sounds like a great concept. I'm gonna go read up on how to just avoid culling now...thanks...I needed something to do.

This is very cool

Incredible.

is the luminosity varied by the zoom out distance?

there's an attempt to automatically keep brightness "good" based on number of stars and fov but it's hard to do perfectly

cool! is it one of the approximations/hacks that lets you run this with very minimal hardware?

it doesn't really reduce the cost, since it just lowers the brightness for each star. I'm not even sure how this runs on minimal hardware, I've only tested it on a 4090 and mobile 3070. the efficiency mostly comes from splatting

just ran it on my old laptop with 1050Ti wouldn't go higher than 7-8 fps

how does something like this run on the 1050?

i see nothing. am i doing something wrong?

na I think it's just an old gpu that probably lacks support for some data type used in the example. I was just curious how it performed on an official example for comparison

this doesnt look good

Why do some quadrants look like Elite Dangerous' galaxy map?

were all so worthless

So cool

Cool!

"there is no LOD/culling" is not something I will brag about, not even in a bar
