MALCOM X "YOU DON'T GET FREEDOM PEACEFULLY" In this rare 1963 This Week interview, Malcolm X speaks from the edge of a courtroom and the edge of a nation’s conscience. The LAPD had just shot seven Black men inside a Los Angeles mosque, yet the men who survived were... the ones put on trial. Malcolm steps into that moment with a clarity that slices across decades. He rejects the myth that freedom can be begged for politely. “You don’t get freedom peacefully. Freedom is never safeguarded peacefully.” He reminds America that those who enforce injustice cannot demand calm from the people they oppress, and that peace built on silence is not peace; it is domination. Malcolm’s warning feels even more urgent today. The same logic that justified police raids on Black spaces now fuels the militarisation of borders, the targeting of migrants, and the daily violence of ICE operations in Black and Brown communities. The same state that talked about “law and order” in the 1960s still talks that “pretty talk”, while families are torn apart, asylum seekers are caged, and entire communities live under the threat of raids, surveillance, and deportation. Malcolm argued that peace only comes through justice and accountability; that America cannot keep practising inhumanity at home while preaching democracy abroad. His voice exposes the continuity between the LAPD storming a mosque and federal agents storming homes, workplaces, and shelters today. It demands that we see the pattern clearly; a state that refuses to dismantle its systems of oppression forces the oppressed to decide how they will respond. More than half a century later, Malcolm X is still indicting the present. His words remind us that freedom is not granted by those who benefit from our confinement, and that real peace begins only when the machinery of racial violence is dismantled, from the police precinct to the border checkpoint. Today, it honors the ideas of liberty, democracy, and the pursuit of happiness that America was established on. 🇺🇸 The 4th of July means Freedom, and Freedom is the true meaning of life. It's important to remember that Freedom is not guaranteed and needs to be actively protected and preserved. Taking our #Freedom for granted can lead to a lack of appreciation for the sacrifices made by those who fought for it. Happy 4th of July everyone.

For many nations, America has been a symbol of hope. For Kosovo, it became something even greater: the embodiment of freedom itself. America did not save Kosovo through speeches, resolutions, or endless debates. It saved lives through courage and action. When many others hesitated, calculated political costs, or chose to look away, America acted. It stood on the right side of history and reminded the world that power is at its noblest when it serves justice. The story of our freedom bears an American imprint. It lives in the lives that were saved, in the peace that was secured, in the institutions that were built, and in the free and sovereign Republic of Kosovo that stands proud today. That is why the people of Kosovo will never forget who stood with us when it mattered most. And when the United States, the nation that stood by us in our darkest hour, extends the hand of partnership, our answer should always be worthy of that friendship: clear, unwavering, and immediate. That is how alliances are strengthened. That is how trust is preserved. That is how friendship endures across generations. As America marks 250 years of liberty, we celebrate not only a nation, but an idea that changed the course of history: that freedom is always worth defending and that the dignity of every human being matters. Happy 250th anniversary, America. Jin, Jiyan, Azadi (Women, Life, Freedom) is not a slogan that was born in western universities; it is a philosophy forged in Kurdish women’s struggle- in the mountains, in the prisons and the streets. It insists that no society is free if women are not free. It insists that democracy must be lived from the grounds up. It demands that national liberation should not overshadow or dismiss women’s liberation. That women are the foundation of life, and only with them can there be genuine freedom, democracy, justice and peace.

Happy 4th of July? Millions of Americans think they’re celebrating 250 years of “freedom” today, but what they’re really celebrating is 250 years of corruption, endless war, and a capitalist system that exploits the many to enrich the few. The uncomfortable truth is none of us in the U.S. are free. We are owned by banks, exploited by billionaires, and controlled by two parties that sell us out at every turn. Freedom is just the illusion they sell to hide the cage and prevent people from ever questioning the dictatorship of capital that controls, exploits, and monetizes every aspect of our lives from birth to death. Where is the freedom when a handful of billionaires [and a trillionaire] hoard ungodly fortunes through the mass exploitation of our labor and the mass extraction of resources that belong to our communities? Where is the freedom when our tax dollars fund endless wars, genocide, and the mass murder of children abroad all to further enrich the billionaire class? Where is the freedom when 70% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck and struggle to afford basic needs like housing, healthcare, and groceries? Where is the freedom when 75% of Americans can’t afford a median-priced home, 100 million Americans live with medical debt, and 140 million Americans are poor or low-income? There is no freedom here. We are all prisoners of a decrepit capitalist system that keeps us trapped in the rat race by demonizing the one economic system, socialism, that would put the economy in the hands of the people. Imagine a world where workers own the means of production, resources are used for the benefit of all, and decisions are made to meet the basic needs of the people rather than the endless greed of billionaires. That is socialism, and there is nothing scary about it. What is scary is continuing to allow a handful of billionaires and two capitalist parties to control our entire economy and make life-or-death decisions for all of humanity. Now is not the time to celebrate a “freedom” that we never had. Now is the time to fight for our freedom from the dictatorship of capital.

Returning home from the United States. We had many tasks to accomplish during this visit, and we implemented many of them. I am grateful to everyone who is helping to stop Russian terror and understands that only strength can force Russia to respect rules and adhere to the fundamental principles of the world. Life is built on principles and the rule of law when they cannot be destroyed by violence. That is why unity is so essential—unity among allies, unity of the world—to stop Russia, end this war, and guarantee a true, just peace. A peace that Ukraine desires more than anyone else in the world, and one that will certainly come.

YOKO ONO: ONOCHORD, VENICE, 2004 Yoko: The world is divided in two industries. One is the War Industry and the other is the Peace Industry. The people in the War Industry are totally together. They don't have to talk to each other, even. They know exactly what they want to do. They want to go out there, kill and make money. But the people in the Peace Industry, which are us - we are so idealistic that each one of us criticises the other Peace Person in the Peace Industry. And we are always just arguing and we are wasting our energies doing that. So let's just forgive each other and see that we are in the Peace Industry and that's all that counts. Even if you are not marching for peace, just be yourself, being a florist, being a merchant, being a talior, anything. That way you're contributing to the Peace Industry. People are just concentrating on fear, confusion and anger. And therefore just for a moment, I'd like us to think about Love. In a very magical, straight way, John and I met in London and from then on we stood for Peace and Love. And when I do this kind of event. Well it is... I was inspired to do it, but I still think that I'm still with John in spirit. John and I created the country called Nutopia. Not Utopia, because there was Utopia as a concept already. And we wanted to create a new concept, so we just added N on it - Nutopia - and as a country. Well, that is the concept of a country. And we all are citizens of that country. And in my apartment in the Dakota Building, we put a little plaque on the back door, the kitchen door. It says 'Nutopian Embassy' and even now we have that. (laughs). Nutopia exists in our minds. And because of that, some people want to rebel against it. The reason some want to rebel against it is a good proof that it exists. I think that it was a terrible thing that happened in Chechnya. But we have to still keep our hopes up. And instead of giving up, we have to keep on sending the message of Love to each other. You say that I am the Ambassador of Peace. We are all Ambassadors of Peace. You are too. Everybody in this room are Ambassadors of Peace. Just the fact that we are not participating in War. The fact that we are here, and we are what we are, means that we are in the Peace Industry. All of us. John and I used to say that our apartment in the Dakota is a conceptual monastry, just for the two of us. And when we go out of the Dakota, we get so many people communicating with us, so it's very important that we had silence and quietness. And my apartment is a very small space compared to the world. And I need that for my peace of mind. You should be kind to each other. You should come together, hug each other, love each other, express our love to each other and we should make it work. We should finally create a world that is a totally an Earth for Us. So let's do it. But the people in the Peace Industry, which are us - we are so idealistic that each one of us criticises the other Peace Person in the Peace Industry. And we are always just arguing and we are wasting our energies doing that. So let's just forgive each other and see that we are in the Peace Industry and that's all that counts. Even if you are not marching for peace, just be yourself, being a florist, being a merchant, being a talior, anything. That way you're contributing to the Peace Industry. People are just concentrating on fear, confusion and anger. And therefore just for a moment, I'd like us to think about Love. I was inspired to do it, but I still think that I'm still with John in spirit. John and I created the country called Nutopia. Not Utopia, because there was Utopia as a concept already. And we wanted to create a new concept, so we just added N on it - Nutopia - and as a country. Well, that is the concept of a country. And we all are citizens of that country. And in my apartment in the Dakota Building, we put a little plaque on the back door, the kitchen door. It says 'Nutopian Embassy' and even now we have that. (laughs). Nutopia exists in our minds. And because of that, some people want to rebel against it. The reason some want to rebel against it is a good proof that it exists. I think that it was a terrible thing that happened in Chechnya. But we have to still keep our hopes up. And instead of giving up, we have to keep on sending the message of Love to each other. You say that I am the Ambassador of Peace. We are all Ambassadors of Peace. You are too. Everybody in this room are Ambassadors of Peace. Just the fact that we are not participating in War. The fact that we are here, and we are what we are, means that we are in the Peace Industry. All of us. John and I used to say that our apartment in the Dakota is a conceptual monastry, just for the two of us. And when we go out of the Dakota, we get so many people communicating with us, so it's very important that we had silence and quietness. And my apartment is a very small space compared to the world. In this 1986 lecture at the University of Colorado Boulder, he dismantles the myth that foreign aid is about helping people. Freedom is one of the most cherished blessings we enjoy. It is woven into the fabric of our nation and defended by generations who understood that liberty comes at a great cost. Yet freedom is more than the absence of restraint - it is the opportunity to choose what is right. The prodigal son demanded freedom from responsibility and discovered that unchecked freedom leads to destruction. True freedom is not the right to do as we want; it is the right to do as we ought. Every freedom carries responsibility, and every choice carries consequences. As believers, we must recognize that freedom is a gift from God that must be stewarded wisely. We are called to stand against hatred, defend truth, and live in a way that blesses those around us. Our lives are connected, and what affects one affects all. Freedom is not absolute, nor is it free. It demands vigilance, responsibility, and moral courage. If we fail to use our freedom to defend what is right, we risk losing the very freedoms we treasure. Let us thank God for liberty, use it wisely, and honor Him with the choices we make every day.

There are many dictatorships in the world. Some seal themselves off within their own borders, trying to block any outside influence of freedom. And others do not recognize borders at all and actively try to destroy the freedom of their neighbors, entire regions, and sometimes even the whole world. When we deal with Russia, we face the second type of threat. It is a mentally unstable dictatorship that cannot accept that in Europe every life matters, human rights are important, and nations can be protected whether they are big or small. Putin cannot accept one simple thing – that somewhere people can live differently and enjoy a life that is not the one he prefers. That is why he has been consistently trying to break someone – not just now, not just for 4 years, but throughout his entire time in power. He is war itself. And anyone who supports Putin cannot fail to understand that they are choosing war. From my address to the European Parliament.
