“Mali, say “hurry!”” As I share child development lessons, I often frame up interactions between parents and their children as they model concepts like “serve and return” and “parentese.” But parents aren’t the only ones who contribute to brain building and other developmental outcomes. Check out this lovely video... of 7-year-old Ben and his 4-month-old brother Mali. Mali is hungry and mom has charged Ben with keeping him engaged momentarily while she prepares to feed him. I love the attunement between the pair. Ben knows Mali is hungry and so engages him with a language lesson to communicate just what he’s feeling: “Hurry please, mom. I’m hungry.” Between the siblings we see so many of the same lovely interactions that I so often highlight between parents and children. Ben serves and then waits as Mali takes his turn to vocalize. His voice varies in intonation in a way we might easily call “parentese” were he Mali’s father - but are better served calling by its formal name in this case: infant-directed language. Ben is down at Mali’s level. Face-to-face and eye-to-eye. What a blessing to have a sibling so well prepared to contribute to his optimal development… and another family member with whom secure attachment is being established. Mali’s a lucky guy. Yes. Even you! If you’ve followed me here for any length of time (or read my book The Daycare Myth), you know that I’ve written extensively about the ways that infant brain development is optimized through face to face interactions with highly engaged adults. Obviously this includes parents as infants most trusted caregivers… but it isn’t limited to parents alone. Which brings us to this incredible video (shared to FB by preciousmoments) in which a grandfather reads Nancy Shaw’s fantastic picture book Sheep in a Jeep to his adoring grandson. You get the sense that reading itself isn’t novel to the little guy, but having grandpa take on the task is a special occasion indeed. So much so, in fact, that our hero is having trouble focusing on the pages - giving each a quick glance and then returning with laser focus to his expressive, smiling grandfather (who knocks the whole experience out of the park). We all play a role in the healthy development of the young children in our lives. So here’s to the doting grandparents! And to the infant/toddler teachers who make this their work each day. And here’s to the aunties and uncles who stand ready to step into the breech and give mom and dad a little respite. And to the engaged best friends and the adoring older siblings! We all have a role to play when it comes to building brains. What a lucky little guy.

It’s like looking in a mirror. 🪞 Check out the joint attention between this little one (10 weeks) and her big brother - who’s teaching an absolute master class in how to stimulate baby’s brain. I mean, are these two locked in or what? Brother is at baby’s level, up close, face-to-face and grinning from ear to ear. Their eye contact is unbroken. No distractions… just them. And he’s mirroring her vocalizations in a way that’s obviously thrilling for baby. Look at her face light up. Infants are the world’s most accomplished language learners. As the process unfolds, children pass through stages of progressively more complex “babbling” before they begin using conventional words. But babbling isn’t limited to spoken language. Deaf children and the children of deaf parents pass through similar stages as they approximate the use of sign language - which brings us to this video, shared to IG by oursignedworld. Watch how locked in this little guy is as he “speaks” with his deaf father, observing dad’s sign language and then “babbling” back with his arms and hands. In time he will become both an accomplished signer and speaker. What a lovely example of language acquisition in process.

New sensory experiences “light up” your child’s developing brain. I just love this video, which has gone viral in recent days, of a toddler being exposed for the first time to a new and fascinating sound: a violin being played by a street performer in Valencia. It’s almost as if he’s drawn by a magnet to the sound and performer - joyfully waving his hands as he wobbles his way over to get a closer look. New sensory experiences activate the brain’s neural networks and help to create and strengthen their pathways. But I also want to spotlight something special the violinist does: Noticing her little admirer, she not only turns to face him, but crouches down to meet him at eye level - allowing him a better vantage point on the whole situation. Not only is this a strategy parents should employ as much as possible, but it’s a great marker of early childhood classroom quality. Looking for an amazing infant-toddler teacher? jiung genuinely has such a beautiful heart. i will never take his care and love for p1ece for granted. i appreciate him so much for talking about things like this, regardless of whether people may think he’s being “too emotional” or “sensitive”. his music and words are so touching and feel like a warm hug- i always say this but we are so lucky to have someone like him in our lives. i’m happy just knowing someone as lovely as him exists in this world. this is a bit of a long one, but please take the time to listen and read 💭🍪🤍

Serve and fetch! I’ve written often about the importance of responsive “serve and return” interactions between infants and their parents… but I’m yet to see one quite like this. Watch this little one’s face as Sloan (a very good boy 🐾) inserts himself into what is intended as a back and forth between he and (in this case) his grandma. Perhaps because he’s never met a talking dog, our hero seems rightfully content to let his four legged friend take the lead… or maybe it’s just that he can’t get a word in edgewise? Regardless, doesn’t Sloan do an amazing job of saying “mama” a couple times here? Hilarious. Happy New Year! This amazing duo was shared to IG by tammypillette.

How does the presence of older siblings influence the development of language? This lovely video brought my mind immediately to research on the topic. There is some consensus that the presence of one or more siblings can correlate with slightly slower* language development among children who are not first born. This is because parents juggling the demands of multiple children generally have less time for one-on-one interaction. But research suggests that this the presence of a “cognitively sensitive” sibling can mitigate against such delays. What is “cognitively sensitive?” It’s this little guy. Notice how he not only takes time out to deliberately expose his newborn sister to language and vocabulary, but makes an effort to slow and simplify his language in recognition that he’s speaking with a baby. He shows the photos. He points (as he’s able) to match vocabulary with what’s on display. It’s like having a third, mini-parent. What a fantastic little teacher. *By the way, the delayed language often displayed by younger siblings is not anything to get too worked up about. Might they develop a little slower? In some cases yes. But do they catch up and close this gap? Also yes. In the long run, there’s also plenty of reason to believe that the presence of siblings can be advantageous. Though subsequent siblings may receive slightly less one-on-one time, they are often exposed to richer and more varied language due to the presence of older children in the home. 14-year-old boy blows away RAV’s Ben Bergquam with powerful words about Charlie Kirk. Keep a close eye on this kid. He’s going places. BEN: “Young man, you want to say why you’re here, what Charlie Kirk meant to you?” BRYSON: “He was my idol. I remember watching his videos, wanting to be like him. would just see the way he would debate, and he stayed calm while the left was just yelling at him. For laughter, love, and language learning… There are so many great things happening as this father and daughter share a board book together. Secure attachment during infancy lays the foundation for our lifelong mental and physical health. As I wind down this week’s series on infant/toddler attachment, I wanted to conclude with a few final words about why it matters so much. Obviously, strong relational connections between parents and children are beneficial in and of themselves. But there’s more to it than that. Attachment grounds and shapes our long-term mental health as well as our ability to enter into positive relationships with others. You see, children who are securely attached tend to be just that: Secure. This allows them to navigate the world independently, with confidence in themselves and their abilities. It almost seems contradictory that independence would spring from dependence. But it most surely does. The more love and care children receive during their earliest months and years and the more attentively and predictably their needs are met by treasured loved ones, the more they experience the world as safe place. And this is a gift to both the brain and the body. When the human body is not flooded daily with stress hormones and when anxiety occurs - not as a constant state - but more occasionally in response to life’s challenges, not only are we better prepared to deal with it - but our bodies don’t bear the long-term burden of a constant stress response. This is a fascinating area of early development that we are still only beginning to fully understand, but suffice it to say that positive early experiences - both in the home and in conjunction with high quality early education and care programs- are increasingly linked to lifelong health. This brain-body connection has huge implications not only for individual children, but for our public policy. A tweet is hardly the place to unpack this conversation in full, but know that my new book, The Daycare Myth (which can be ordered from the link in my bio) explores in detail the disconnect between what we know about the science of early development and how it is enacted (or, more frequently, not enacted) in our public policy. Mali 🇲🇱 has Fallen!!! Military Populist rhetoric often sounds powerful in moments of uncertainty, but reality has a way of exposing its limits. See as Convoys of FLA/JNIM militants rolled into Mali’s capital unchallenged, 🤦🏾‍♂️ their gun trucks moving freely as civilians stood by the roadside, watching in is dismay.. The terrorist have successfully entered the capital city Bamako & Taureg capital Kidal, Mali 🇲🇱 President Tinubu, and Ecowas. What are you guys waiting for again? 🙄💁🏾‍♂️ Are we expected to fold our arms why a jihadist terrorist occupies the land and government of Mali?

Normally broken dogs come into my life and after a few months with us I am just like everybody else following their lives on Instagram. Today was already the highlight of my year as I got to see Bob! Bob was always very special to me as a gentle soul on the streets who I looked forward to seeing every single day with Angelina. My feeding route feels a bit empty without them and there isn’t a day I don’t look at their little spot and think back. We took him through the grief process which was very hard for him but I am so proud of him in his new home. He couldn’t have wished for better parents who dote upon him and his sister is a superstar. I loved watching the new confident Bob strutting around the beach. I’d never seen the side if him on the streets as he was just surviving there. He still loves to look around and see his sister and parents with his little side eye. Bob was always happy to be a pack member and he really has that now. Somewhere up there Angelina is looking down singing a little song for Bob that he is so happy. I didn’t want to wear my new T-Shirt that Matilda got me as it is so special but I figured I won’t have a bigger more exciting thing to go to the meeting Bob! Best. Day. Ever.
