Have you posted any videos with explanation into when toddlers start pointing at everything wondering what it’s called. My 13 month old does this daily now and I guess it’s just curiosity and discovery? Or is it something else 😂

That’s a great question… will see if I can find a good video to match. In short yes, there’s a lot of curiosity involved, but it’s also kind of a cool new conceptual understanding about language. Your little one has discovered that things have names and is growing their collection!

Face-to-face interactions stimulate your newborn’s brain in ways that pave the way for language learning. This according to fascinating new research from Dr. Patricia Kuhl and colleagues at the I-LABS. We’ve long known that serve and return stimulates the infant brain and supports parent/child bonding. But now, through use of magnetoencephalography (a fancy brain scan), Kuhl and colleagues have determined that these early interactions play a role in stimulating specific attention centers in the brain critical to language learning during a sensitive window from 6-12 months. In the study, children with the highest levels of stimulation in these attention centers at 5 months demonstrated superior language learning at five future points, measured up to two years after the initial scans. When it comes to infants, however, lap reading can deprive babies of their favorite (and most important) sight: YOU. Which is why you might want to explore face-to-face reading as well. (With your baby facing toward you and the book simultaneously.) Developmentally, there are multiple benefits to allowing your baby to see you as you read together. This video might be the perfect combination of the two - highlighting the power of a deeply engaged sibling. You’ll be hard pressed to find a more adoring and engaged gaze than this little one’s. It’s clear that big sister holds a special place in her heart. And wow… does she ever “return” baby’s engagement in the most fantastic way. It’s important, first and foremost, to note that infant attention spans are very short. So know that it’s okay to start small… reading for just a minute or two at a time. But there are also ways you can optimize your chances of a successful experience. One trick is to literally turn things around, as illustrated by this great video from justjessfood on IG, who (with the assistance of a supportive pillow) has turned lap reading into a face-to-face social experience. There’s nothing your baby loves more than your face… as evidenced by this sweet little guy who arguably takes more delight in mom’s expressive reading than in a view of the book itself. And that’s just fine! He’s still accruing all the language benefits as they bond. And talk about an appreciative audience! Am I reading with my baby too soon? (Spoiler alert: No. Never.) A parent recently reached out with this very question, noting that her infant often seems more focused on her during reading time than on the books themselves. Perhaps she was just introducing them too early? In reality, it’s never too early. But it’s also important to realize that, in the earliest months of life, the goal of reading isn’t about your child attending to the text - or even to the illustrations. Reading with your infant is a social activity. It is an opportunity for bonding. It’s an opportunity to expose your little one to rich and varied vocabulary. If your baby spends the whole time looking at you, that’s just fine. In fact, it’s beneficial. As you read, your baby is attuned to the way your mouth is making all these amazing sounds. Watch this little one closely. Her eyes rarely leave big brother’s face. I can’t say with certainty that she even glances at the book itself. But we’d be hard pressed to suggest she isn’t eating the experience up! She knows from repeated readings that this particular book (“Moo, Baa, La-la-la!” by Sandra Boynton - who is, BTW, the patron saint of board books) is filled with new and unusual sounds - which she anticipates (and delights in) on every page. In time she’ll begin attuning to the book. To how its pages work. To its colorful illustrations. And eventually to the strange marks on the page that seem to hold meaning. Music moves us in more ways than one. Research suggests that listening to music increases activity in the parts of the brain associated with emotion and memory. But it also stimulates the literal movement of our bodies. Watch what happens here when mom asks to see this little one’s dance moves - and provides her with an improvised beat. Not only does mom’s musical accompaniment light up her baby’s brain, but the resulting dance is great for her gross motor development - helping baby to improve her growing balance and coordination. A couple weeks ago, I shared a story about a woman who took a class to chaperone at the California Science Center—only to find a man in the women’s restroom. When she raised her concerns, they brushed her off as “just her opinion.” I met up with her and returned to the Science Center to ask about changes and future plans. It’s about action, not attention. Check out this expressive little one at the nail shop. 💅 While not yet speaking conventionally, there’s little question what she is trying to convey here: she wants her nails done just like everyone else. With an animated voice and her fingers outstretched for the duration of the conversation (“Look, I have fingernails too!”), she makes an impassioned case, for sure. She pauses briefly for a hug, but returns to her point as this fantastic video (posted to IG by hermespenelope) ends. Just wait until she has the vocabulary to bolster her argument! Terrific serve and return interaction from the adult here as well. Notice how she gets down on Baby’s level, maintains eye contact, and acknowledges and extends each vocalization. Way to be a brain builder! 🧠

It may seem odd to have a conversational partner that can’t yet respond in conventional ways. But your baby is soaking your language up like a sponge. And never forget they learn language from YOU. Not a screen. Speak face to face with your baby. Make eye contact. Put down your phone and light up that developing brain 🧠. Talk, talk, talk. Engage, engage, engage. You’ll be amazed by the results - and you will have set your baby on the path toward a lifetime of success.

I’ve shared “first meeting” videos (between new siblings) in the past, but never one quite like this. What’s so remarkable about this special moment shared to IG by alexandralforte? For me it’s the very clear sense that this ISN’T the first conversation between big brother Everest and his new baby sister. It’s just their first chance to do so face to face… a new chapter in a relationship that’s already been well established. “Hi Avalon! It’s ME, Everest,” he explains, as if to say, “I bet you’ve been wondering what I look like this whole time.” What a perfect example to remind us that the hearing of newborns is established and functional - perhaps as early as 24-26 weeks of gestation, but almost certainly by 30 weeks, making it possible for infants to enter the world already familiar with the voices of special loved ones. (Especially mom, whose voice has the benefit of built-in amplification as it reverberates through her body.) Can’t you just imagine the conversations these two have already had? And all the many to come? Talk to your bump. Kudos to Mom and Dad for nurturing this special relationship even before baby Avalon entered the world. How lucky for them all!

I just love this video, which has gone viral in recent days, of a toddler being exposed for the first time to a new and fascinating sound: a violin being played by a street performer in Valencia. It’s almost as if he’s drawn by a magnet to the sound and performer - joyfully waving his hands as he wobbles his way over to get a closer look. New sensory experiences activate the brain’s neural networks and help to create and strengthen their pathways. But I also want to spotlight something special the violinist does: Noticing her little admirer, she not only turns to face him, but crouches down to meet him at eye level - allowing him a better vantage point on the whole situation. Not only is this a strategy parents should employ as much as possible, but it’s a great marker of early childhood classroom quality. Looking for an amazing infant-toddler teacher? Your baby wants nothing more than to be like you. 🏈 Get a load of this little apprentice, who is spending a Saturday afternoon learning to watch college football in the style of her father. Her posture and focused attention closely mirror dad’s. But the real highlight here is how she reacts to his expression of frustration with a call by the referees - mimicking dad’s reaction to a first down that he (and hence the duo) believes was unearned, her little arms flailing in disbelief, just like his. It’s an excellent reminder that young children are always watching and learning from their most cherished teachers, even when we don’t realize they’re doing it.
