Mary's letter isn't real, and it changes as the game progresses. It turns blank when James kills Eddie, it disappears from the envelope after watching the videotape, and the envelope also disappears after the Pyramid Heads fight, when James finally accepts the truth. James never really got a letter... that called him to Silent Hill, it was just another delusion, because he was desperate to convince himself that Mary was still alive, and that the past 3 years of her illness never happened. #silenthill #silenthill2show more

One of the developers said that Mary’s body is in the backseat/trunk of the car. I always liked the theory that almost no time had passed. He did the deed, had a psychological break, and immediately begins the plot of the game.

I like that too, I prefer to think of sh2 as an entirely psychological story :)

(This is a spoiler for people who haven't completed the game.) Fans long theorized that Mary's corpse is in James's car. This was confirmed, but it was specified he did NOT put her in the trunk, because he wouldn't do that to her.

Well, she's in the trunk in the novel and then James picks her up and puts her on the passenger seat, so there's that version of the events too... But yes, in the remake she's in the backseat
