James treats Angela with much more empathy than everyone else. In the official SH2 novel he quickly understood her trauma even though she never told him, and he always excused her aggression because he understood her pain. An example is this scene. He knows she feels unwanted and says he's happy to see her (unlike her mother who didn't want to see her) because he wants to bring her some comfort. He also suggests they should leave the town together, even though he hasn't found Mary. He never suggested the same to Laura, even though she's a child and she's alone. Angela brings out a much more "human" and empathetic side of James that he doesn't show to any other character, not even to Laura or Mary. James made up Mary's letter, it's a hallucination. The letter changes as the game progresses. It turns blank when James arrives at Lakeview Hotel, it disappears from the envelope after watching the videotape, and the envelope also disappears after the Pyramid Heads fight, when James accepts the truth. It's just another desperate attempt to trick himself. The official SH2 novel gives some insight on James' drinking problem and the changes in his behavour after Mary got sick. He even assumed Mary's letter was a cruel prank by his coworkers or neighbors, because he's on bad terms with them. "It was like some sort of cruel joke, conceived by a particularly malicious person. A joke played to mock James even though he was still heartbroken and grieving. Maybe it was one of his neighbors? Or perhaps it was one of his coworkers? At any rate, after he lost his wife, James took to drinking and began to conceal his sorrow with outbursts of anger. It affected everyone around him to the point that his coworkers didn't want to put up with his sullen behavior. Before long, he was treated like a trouble-maker. For that reason, he could easily see how someone could hold a grudge against him." Although he thinks other people are out to get him, just like Eddie, he doesn't blame them and acknowledges that he's the problem. There's only one window we can look outside in Brookhaven, and James sees tall buildings instead of Silent Hill. It's most likely a memory of South Ashfield where he and Mary lived. It also looks very similar to the view on a mental health poster. He drops off the food at the front desk when a woman approaches him, she started making comments about his nose ring so he takes out his camera in case anything serious happens. The man’s been harassed before because of this. She starts to ask him why he has it and then she starts to shame him for having it. He tries to explain why he has it but she keeps making backhanded remarks to him about it. Punch was trying to comfort himself before falling asleep. James can get a nervous tic if he gets too stressed. It can only trigger after he enters Brookhaven, the hospital likely triggers a PTSD response and the stress remains afterwards. Interacting with a red square stops the tic. Perhaps what helps is the feeling of "someone groping around his skull" that he mentions in the opening..?
