Mazda's No piston Rotary engine that screams like an F1 car

This post is deceiving, The rotary engine was invented by Felix Wankel in the 1920's, not by Mazda.

silly question ( i know nothing about engines ) but it looks like it would wear a lot faster than a conventional engine, is that correct?

This a Wankel engine. It was conceptualized by German Engineer Felix Wankel.

It is worth to mention that this engine - Wankel engine - typically has less peak thermal efficiency than piston engine. That leads to higher fuel consumption and higher emissions due to uncompressed/unburnt carbons. That doesn't make it a "bad" engine though.

I had the rx8 at one point in my life fun car to drive

I had an RX-8, funnest car I ever drove. It had a 6 speed manual and 9700 RPM redline if I remember correctly. You could easily find yourself going way faster than you should be. That said I added a small amount of 2 cycle engine oil to every tank of gas. It could go 60 mph in 2nd gear. Sports cars aren't meant to be practical. Road and track said "Drivimg an RX-8 is like dating a stripper." It was addicted to the gas pump and takes a lot of oil making oil changes more expensive.

Yes - and wears out tip seals blindingly fast, laps drive gears till they are loose and sloppy - and drinks oil like a rugby player drinks beer (and other alcoholic beverages).

NSU Ro 80 from 1967

Felix Wankel (a prominent member of the Nazi Party) got his first patent for a rotary type of engine in 1934.

There are many types of rotary engines, this special design is a Wankel rotary engine, named after Felix Wankel. In my youth I saw quite some Wankel-driven NSU Ro 80 cars on German roads. At that age I didn't care for the engine design, but the cars looked cool :)

Make more power? not if measured by fuel compressed and ignited per cycle, calculating by single chamber per rotor is ridiculous and deceiving.

@grok how much intertia loss is there in this engine vs more classical 4 stroke 4 cylinder ones? (the amount of energy lost accelerating the pistons around at every cycle - aka. the amount that would be saved if the weight of the pistons was 0 kg - like carbon fiber)

Great motor for RPM and thus Horsepower but lacks meaningful amount of Torque.

I remember watching the JPS Nortons on the British Superbike Circuit in the ‘90s. The noise they generated was something else and they sat on the start grid belching flames from the exhaust, memorable machines

Did top speed in blk r1 tt for many hrs. Atl-n Mia 6:3hrs very fast turbos .small shifts!
