ALERT: Shoplifter from Target tracked down by police drone and caught while trying to enjoy a meal at Arby's. The Arvada Police Department in Colorado received a call from a loss-prevention officer at Target about an active shoplifter in the store. When confronted by security, the shoplifter fled, and APD quickly launched a Drone First Responder (DFR). The DFR tracked the thief and followed him across the street, where he entered an Arby’s. Officers identified the man inside the Arby’s and detained him without incident. The shoplifter stole about $350 in merchandise from Target and was transported to jail.

On Wednesday, July 1, at approximately 5:00 p.m., a suspect entered the Community Banks of Colorado branch located at 7530 Grandview Avenue and announced, “This is a robbery.” The suspect also made statements indicating there could be guns and additional people involved. The Arvada Police Department's Drone First Responder (DFR) program quickly deployed a drone to the scene. The drone provided officers with real-time intelligence, allowing them to observe the suspect through the bank's front windows and entrance. This information enabled officers to safely establish a perimeter around the bank and wait for the suspect to exit, reducing the risk of a potential hostage situation. After receiving money from bank employees, the suspect moved toward the front door. Once the DFR pilot advised officers that the suspect was exiting the building, officers immediately contacted and arrested him without incident. The suspect was booked into the Jefferson County Jail on charges of Aggravated Robbery and is awaiting formal charges through the First Judicial District Attorney’s Office. The Arvada Police Department would like to commend the bank employees and patrons for remaining calm and composed during a frightening situation. Their actions, combined with the coordinated response of responding officers and the Drone First Responder team, helped bring the incident to a safe resolution.

Last night, Washoe County Sheriff’s Office DFR (Drone as First Responder) pilots used RapidSOS live 911 monitoring to launch one of our unmanned aerial vehicles, commonly known as a drone, in response to a report of a suspicious person in the backyard of a residence in Sparks. The drone was airborne and on scene within three minutes of the call being broadcast to patrol deputies. Once overhead, DFR pilots began canvassing the area and relaying real-time information to responding deputies. Beginning Thursday, Sept. 10, 2026, 2 Skydio X10 drones will be deployed to select incidents in northeast & southeast Calgary. The drones will provide responding members with real-time aerial information to help them better understand unfolding incidents & determine the most appropriate response. 💬 “The Drone as First Responder model has been successfully implemented by other police agencies & has shown potential to enhance emergency response. This trial will help us determine how the technology can support public safety in Calgary by providing responding officers with valuable information about an incident, often before they arrive on scene.” — Supt. Jodi Gach of the CPS Operational Support Division. The drones are deployed from a secure location in northeast Calgary. When an eligible call for service is identified, a sworn CPS member trained as a drone pilot can remotely deploy a drone to the scene. In some cases, the drone may arrive before responding officers, providing an early view of the incident that can help members identify risks, locate individuals & make informed operational decisions. While we have used drones for several years to support public safety operations, including emergency incidents, searches & investigations, DFR introduces a new deployment model that allows drones to respond directly to select calls for service & provide information during the early stages of an incident. ℹ️ The use of drones for the trial has been approved by Transport Canada.
