In the late 1990s, Rolls-Royce needed a new engine. The old pushrod V8 that had powered their cars for decades could no longer meet European emissions regulations. Rolls-Royce's went looking for a supplier and BMW stepped forward with something specific, a 5.4L aluminium alloy V12, built exclusively for this car. The M73 engine, the same unit from the BMW 750i, 850i, was adapted for the Silver Seraph with a five-speed ZF automatic gearbox. It produced 326 PS and made the Silver Seraph the first Rolls-Royce with a twelve-cylinder engine since the 1939 Phantom III. It was also the first Rolls-Royce ever designed using computer-aided design software. The body was 65% stiffer than the car it replaced. And then, while the Silver Seraph was still in production, BMW acquired Rolls-Royce entirely. The engine supplier became the owner.

UNITED AIRLINES DROPS AIRBUS A350 ORDER AMID ENGINE DISPUTE WITH ROLLS-ROYCE The long-running saga between United Airlines and the Airbus A350 has taken a decisive turn. In its latest SEC 10-K filing, United removed the A350 from its “expected aircraft deliveries,” signaling it no longer plans to take the 45 widebodies that have remained on its books for years. The move follows a high-stakes dispute with Rolls-Royce over a widebody engine purchase and maintenance agreement. At the center is a $175 million commitment payment: United demanded repayment, alleging Rolls-Royce breached the agreement, while Rolls-Royce terminated the contracts, claiming United was in breach. Both parties now assert the other owes damages. This breakdown eliminates the engine framework intended for United’s future A350 fleet. The order has a complex history. In 2009, United ordered 25 A350-900s. In 2013, it increased the order to 35 and converted to the larger A350-1000. By 2017, the airline reverted to the A350-900 and raised the total to 45. For nearly a decade, deliveries were repeatedly deferred. While contractual filings still list 45 A350s scheduled beyond 2027, the “expected deliveries” column now shows zero. This is the clearest sign yet that United’s A350 program is effectively over.

This is the most powerful commercial jet engine currently flying on an operational airliner. The GE90-115B was built by GE Aerospace specifically for the Boeing 777-300ER. It weighs around 8.3 tonnes, has a 3.25 metre wide fan and produces up to 512 kN (115,000 lbf) of thrust from a single engine. To understand the sheer scale of that output, it produces roughly 2.7 times the thrust of the F135 jet engine powering the F-35, the most powerful fighter engine currently in service. The enormous fan at the front uses just 22 carbon fibre composite blades with titanium leading edges. At maximum thrust, it pulls in roughly 1.4 tonnes of air every second, with nearly 90% bypassing the core rather than passing through the combustor. At around 150 knots during takeoff, its 512 kn of thrust corresponds to roughly 39.5 MW of propulsive power, or in automotive terms around 53,000 hp from one engine. And it burns roughly 4-5 kg of jet fuel every second at maximum power conditions. Two of these engines are enough to power a fully loaded 777-300ER weighing more than 350 tonnes. Even if one engine fails after the critical point during takeoff, the aircraft is certified to continue the takeoff and climb on the remaining one GE90 engine. Each engine costs around $35-40 million. More than 2,500, GE90s engines have been built, and the GE90 family has accumulated nearly 130 million flight hours. And this is precisely why companies like GE Aerospace remain so difficult to displace in jet engines. There is never one breakthrough. GE spent roughly $2+ billion developing the GE90, chasing small gains across hundreds of systems, efficiency, materials, reliability and component life.
