Some houses completely submerged underwater, days after Hurricane Melissa swept through the island. We’re continuing to collect donations for those affected by Hurricane Melissa. Items can be dropped off at the Jamaica Observer (40 - 42 1/2 Beechwood Avenue), which is serving as a donation centre. My Jamaican family, especially those in the parishes of Westmoreland, Hanover, Trelawny, St. James, and St. Elizabeth, we know you have been hardest hit by Hurricane Melissa, and we know that your needs are urgent. Many of you are anxious and still processing the trauma of an event few could have imagined. We want to assure you that we are working, every hour of every day, to reach you. The Jamaica Defence Force, the National Works Agency, the Jamaica Constabulary Force, and our Fire Brigade are on the ground, clearing blocked roads and re-establishing access to communities that remain cut off. We have welcomed a 300-member humanitarian team from El Salvador, trained in search and rescue, public order, disaster response, and health care. They have arrived with medical supplies and essential relief. We are also working closely with the United States to enhance air support, with helicopters now supplementing the JDF fleet to accelerate aid delivery. These are tangible examples of how we are mobilizing all available local and international partnerships to ensure every community receives assistance. American independent journalist and storm chaser Jonathan Petramala, known for documenting some of the most extreme weather events on the planet, shared a touching story while reporting from Jamaica. Petramala mentioned he’d been trying to find a rain jacket since arriving in Jamaica after forgetting his poncho at home. There, he met with our NGO partners and saw how U.S. assistance is helping communities recover from Hurricane Melissa. The United States is providing US $22 million in lifesaving humanitarian relief. “Boy, it’s a devastating thing. Mi actually lose everything,” said Ocho Rios craft market vendor Dennis Gordon, who watched as an uprooted tree crashed onto his shop during Hurricane Melissa. The veteran trader, who has worked in the craft market for over 50 years, described the loss as one of the worst he has ever seen. “As you can see, everything liquid. The shop top lift off, lift off. We got a loss — a really big loss, and we lose a lot of money… but we have life. We give thanks that we wake this morning.” Despite the destruction, Gordon urged Jamaicans to show compassion in the aftermath. “Everybody in Jamaica to play this part. Help each other who is down. Don’t laugh and ridicule.
