Born on the Fourth of July nearly won Tom Cruise an Oscar for Best Actor back in 1990, but Cruise ran into the force of nature that is Daniel Day-Lewis, who won for My Left Foot. This is a painful story about the sacrifices veterans make & it’s some of Cruise’s best acting. I think the Cruise-Oliver Stone pairing is interesting in hindsight. 26 years later, Cruise might finally get that Oscar for Digger.

Tom Cruise’s performance in The Last Samurai is one of the first things I bring up anytime someone ignorantly suggests that Cruise can’t act. Cruise is quietly vulnerable in this role & his physicality and dedication is impeccable. Cruise’s nonverbal acting in this film is some of the best of his career. Don’t ever question this man’s acting chops.

Tom Cruise has worked with so many great directors but I really believe he has the best chemistry with Michael Mann. They’re both detail-obsessed & masters of the technical aspects of cinema. I’m not sure if it’s naive but I hold out hope they’ll reunite at some point again.

John Goodman has never won an Oscar- Hell, he’s somehow never even been *nominated* for an Oscar. I desperately hope that changes with Goodman’s performance in the upcoming film Digger alongside Tom Cruise. Goodman is everywhere in the trailer Cruise released today. I’ve also read early reviews singing Goodman’s praises. I hope this is finally his moment.

Not just a trailer, we also got an official poster, plus plenty of footage of Tom Cruise looking wildly transformed in Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s Digger. It’s not only Cruise; everything and everyone on screen feels strikingly different, with clear homages to Stanley Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove. And best of all, it all looks hilariously unhinged, and the cat probably deserves a whole new movie just to see what the creature has endured in her lifetime.

Alejandro Iñárritu is back in theaters in 2 weeks with the release of Digger, a film which has brought the heavy spotlight back on Tom Cruise. But people shouldn’t discount how meaningful it is that Iñárritu is back in theaters. This man owns 2 Academy Awards for Best Director. I revisited The Revenant at the end of 2024 & it was better than I remembered. I think Iñárritu has an incredible creative vision & is a great ambassador to Cinema. I’m so glad he’s back.
