This moment from Thief is one of my favorite scenes in any Michael Mann film. James Caan was so capable of playing a paradoxical role: a man infinitely confident, always ready to rumble, yet still incredibly vulnerable. Cann captured that juxtaposition perfectly. What a film.

Thief is a Michael Mann masterpiece. The more I’ve watched this, the more it’s morphed into an all-time favorite because the filmmaking here is really mature & really detailed. James Caan was a force of nature. The fact he’s gone still doesn’t feel real. He couldn’t be better.

Michael Mann is a fucking genius. This sequence between Robert Prosky & James Caan at the end of Thief is Mann firing on all cylinders. Prosky matches Caan’s intensity the entire way. It’s why the look on Caan’s face at the end of this scene says it all. “Back to work, Frank….”

James Caan completely improvised this little moment in The Godfather. When Sonny grabs the FBI photographer’s camera and smashes it on the ground, nobody knew Caan was going to do it. He then came up with throwing money down to pay for it on the spot. Caan said it came from the way he grew up. If you broke something, you paid for it. Such a small detail, but it feels completely natural for Sonny.

The Rewatchables did an awesome episode this past week on Michael Mann’s Ali. Preserving Muhammad Ali’s legacy is so important for our culture- Ali was an irreplaceable 20th Century figure. Michael Mann & Will Smith did Ali justice with this film. As discussed on The Rewatchables, this is not a film without flaw, in part because it bites off a little more than it can chew. But Smith absolutely nails this performance & Mann’s direction has so much soul. Please see this film.
