MICROSOFT DROPPED A 4B PARAMETER MODEL THAT TURNS ONE IMAGE INTO A 3D ASSET IN 3 SECONDS and it's open source TRELLIS.2 fully textured, physically accurate 3D models with PBR textures out of the box not a rough mesh..not a placeholder roughness, metallic, opacity the kind of detail that...

It is amazing how well it did, and just as amazing at how wrong some simple parts were.

this is one of those few times when i don’t have to check the actual model to call bullshit on your shilling ass, because it’s far too obvious. shame on you.

Women are going to use this to 3D print all the dick pics they get.

the gap most people miss: 'fully textured 3D' from one image is viewer-grade, not engine-grade. great for product previews and AR mockups. drop one into Unity and you'll spend the saved time on retopology + UV unwrap + LODs anyway. tested 3 of these last month for a video pipeline — only 1 mesh was clean enough to skip cleanup.

just tried it...horrible model. Maybe take a bit longer than 3 seconds?

huggingface demo: Error. After nothing, got the message: You reach you limit. Please upgrade to 9$ tier. As a good µ$oft tool it's a joke 😜

Trellis2 has been out for a while. That is an impressive demo that you showed. Yes, it does what yuou described; but the geo that is generated is, currently, good in a limited fashion. As a professional 3D artist the resulting geo has a limited scope. Will this change? I am sure so, but right now - it is nice, but limited in scope and application.

Open source 3D from a single image in 3 seconds. The demo is impressive. Maintaining texture quality across different lighting conditions is where it gets real.

I've done some benchmarking and analysis on this model running locally on consumer hardware. It's also worth noting that this model has been out for some time.

Here are some tips, use an image where the background is transparent and the subject is in the foreground. Have the subject completely in frame. Pick something that is easy or naturally 3D to start with.

I wish @MaxonVFX could do this. Anytime I import a CAD, texture it, and then attempt to split it with Boole it more than likely will fail (and very possibly crash the software). Voronoi fracture is INCREDIBLY slow.

That 4B parameter model's open-source - that's a big deal. Could make 3D asset creation way more accessible.

Microsoft was silent all these days and now cooking with launching free open source model for the users that are really efficient; Previously it was a 7B voice model and now with a 4B 3D asset model

Problems with every single model as of April 27, 2026. Zero Clean code. Zero TDD compliance. Zero Observability. Zero Verification workflows. Nothing is built in. AI models cannot become productive until these guard rails are built in. Vibing with zero verifiable results...

i'm having trouble understamding what this thing actually does or how a 4n parameter model works, can someone break dowb the math behind it for me?

WOW. 😳 Apple just quietly won the 3D maps war at WWDC. Gaussian Splatting is coming to Apple Maps Flyover this fall. Apple Maps Flyover covers 300+ cities. Until yesterday, every single one was built on standard drone photogrammetry. The technology captures photos from the air and reconstructs 3D geometry from them. Gaussian Splatting does not reconstruct geometry. It represents the scene as millions of tiny 3D ellipsoids, each one carrying its own color and opacity information based on how light actually behaves in that location. The output is not a mesh model. It is a field of light. When you move through it, it does not crumble at the edges. The detail holds because it was never geometry to begin with. Apple has been hiring for this for years. Their SHARP model, published in research last year, generates photorealistic 3D scenes from a single image in under a second. Google has more sensor data than anyone. More Street View cars, more satellites, more capture history. On navigation accuracy and geodata depth, Google Maps is still ahead by most measures. But fidelity in 3D city rendering is a different competition, and Apple just set a bar in that. Most people will experience this in the fall without knowing the name of the technology. They will open Flyover, look at a city they know, and notice it looks different. Real, not rendered. That is the moment Gaussian Splatting stops being a research term and becomes something a billion people use. Bookmark this. It will look prescient by October.

Just how capable are open source models? Below is the first in a new series where we go behind the scenes and pull back the curtain on interesting AI research / demos, making them fun and easy to understand. Here, we have a short visual demonstration from aizk ✡️ showcasing how Kimi K3 (a language model that operates primarily through text) is capable of building complicated 3D structures / moments in history in Minecraft, something that previously was not possible with other open source models, and why this matters. The crazy part? The model doesn't "see" the game like we do. The LLMs must reason in pure text, writing JavaScript, that later compiles down into commands placing each block, one at a time. Spatial reasoning is a very hard problem in AI, it's the same core challenge behind robotics and self-driving cars, where a model has to understand and act in physical 3D space. Watching a text model pull it off is nothing short of a miracle. The point isn't just Minecraft itself, rather, it's AI being able to generalize, not memorize, on things that are weird and beyond their training data. This is key to building true artificial general intelligence. These video game benchmarks (there are many different games actively being researched right now) provide a clear-cut end goal, challenges that are almost certainly not in the training set, and a fun, very fast, visual way to almost feel the increasing capabilities of various open source AI models over time. If you haven't given open source models a serious try yet, watch the video, it may shock you!
