Just how capable are open source models? Below is the first in a new series where we go behind the scenes and pull back the curtain on interesting AI research / demos, making them fun and easy to understand. Here, we have a short visual demonstration from aizk ✡️... showcasing how Kimi K3 (a language model that operates primarily through text) is capable of building complicated 3D structures / moments in history in Minecraft, something that previously was not possible with other open source models, and why this matters. The crazy part? The model doesn't "see" the game like we do. The LLMs must reason in pure text, writing JavaScript, that later compiles down into commands placing each block, one at a time. Spatial reasoning is a very hard problem in AI, it's the same core challenge behind robotics and self-driving cars, where a model has to understand and act in physical 3D space. Watching a text model pull it off is nothing short of a miracle. The point isn't just Minecraft itself, rather, it's AI being able to generalize, not memorize, on things that are weird and beyond their training data. This is key to building true artificial general intelligence. These video game benchmarks (there are many different games actively being researched right now) provide a clear-cut end goal, challenges that are almost certainly not in the training set, and a fun, very fast, visual way to almost feel the increasing capabilities of various open source AI models over time. Jason Calacanis: Anthropic, OpenAI and others are trying to kill OpenClaw Why? Because an open source agent platform is an existential threat to frontier model companies. @jason: “ People are going to say I'm a conspiracy theorist, but the number one goal, I believe, in the large language model, frontier model space, is to kill (OpenClaw). This is a giant movement to stop it, because this is the equivalent of having an open source Android-like player in the market, and that could be incredibly disruptive. Because, I believe, open source is going to win the day on the large language models and take 90% of the token usage, and I think the entire frontier model space could be undercut by open source. And I think they realize that SLMs, the smaller language models that are verticalized now, that will run on desktops and laptops and are even starting to run on the top ones, that is their biggest competitive threat, and I hope it happens.”

Sam on Kimi, distillation, and open source: “I have always assumed that there are going to be great cheap models in the world, and we better be the greatest and the cheapest. You get a better deal today, at least at a particular latency, using OpenAI's models than Kimi. We distill our own models. That’s how we make smaller, cheaper models. That’s a very good thing to do. There will clearly be an important place for open source models in the world and people that will want their own weights. We have so much usage of our models that we do not need to be a gigantically high-margin business to be able to afford model training. I would rather people not distill from us, for sure. But this is not in my top ten list of worries.”

NVIDIA just released a new open source transcription model, Nemotron Speech ASR, designed from the ground up for low-latency use cases like voice agents. Here's a voice agent built with this new model. 24ms transcription finalization and total voice-to-voice inference time under 500ms. This agent actually uses *three* NVIDIA open source models: - Nemotron Speech ASR - Nemotron 3 Nano 30GB in a 4-bit quant (released in December) - A preview checkpoint of the upcoming Magpie text-to-speech model These models are all truly open source: weights, training data, training code, and inference code. This is a big deal! Jensen said in the CES keynote yesterday that he expects open source models to catch up to proprietary models this year in a number of categories. Small Language Models (SML) are the future of AI. "Small" (SML) instead of "Large" (LLM). These small models are highly specialized models with superhuman abilities on specific tasks. Here are two techniques to build these models: • Spectrum • Model Merging I give you a short introduction in the attached video, but here is a quick summary: Spectrum helps us identify the most relevant layers to solve one specific task. We can ignore everything else and focus on fine-tuning these layers. Using Spectrum, we can fine-tune models in a heartbeat. Model Merging combines multiple models into a unique, much better model than any of the individual input models. You can also combine models specialized in different tasks and get a model with multiple abilities. This is the state of the art of productizing models. It's what Arcee.ai's platform does behind the scenes. Arcee collaborated with me on this post and is sponsoring it. There are three main steps to produce a model for your particular use case: 1. You create a dataset by uploading your data. 2. You train a model. At this step, Arcee uses Spectrum and Model Merging to produce a highly specialized model for your task. 3. You can deploy that model to any environment you want. Yann LeCun -- Meta's chief AI scientist and a Turing Award winner -- explains why scaling up LLMs will never reach human-level AI, and names the four things today's systems still can't do: "If you think that we're going to get to human-level AI by just training on more data and scaling up LLMs, you're making a mistake." "If you're an investor and you invest in a company that told you we're going to get to human-level AI and PhD level by just training on more data and with a few tricks... that was probably not a good idea." "There are ideas about how to go forward and have systems that are capable of doing what every intelligent animal and human are capable of doing, and that current AI systems are not capable of doing." "Understanding the physical world, having persistent memory, and being able to reason and plan. Those are the four characteristics that need to be there." "That requires systems that can acquire common sense, that can learn from natural sensors like video, as opposed to just text." The entire market is priced on a straight line from bigger models to AGI. One of the people who invented deep learning is telling you the line doesn't reach -- and that the real bottleneck isn't compute, it's world models. If he's right, the winner isn't whoever stacks the most GPUs. It's whoever teaches a machine to learn from video the way a child does.

SITUATION EXPLAINED: A new generation of AI labs are betting that world models are the path to general intelligence that can interact with the real world. We had General Intuition CEO Pim de Witte on MTS to explain what world models are, and why intuitively world models offer a clearer path towards general intelligence than LLMs. For humans, text is a technology for compressing information about the unfolding, three-dimensional world around us and communicating it to other people. When LLMs reason about the world, they do so by reconstructing the world through text. World models work by modeling the three-dimensional world at the architecture level and then allowing agents to interact with that world. Unlike an LLM, which understands space and time through text, world models perform spatial and temporal reasoning natively. General Intuition hopes to use world models to create embodied AI—machines that can reason and act in the real world. But other companies are also pushing the frontier in this space. Odyssey ML today announced a multi-agent world model, Agora-1. Their launch video shows four participants interacting with a real-time world model simulation of GoldenEye, a first-person shooter for the N64. A playable preview of the GoldenEye simulation is available on their site.

I CHANGED MY MIND ON GOOGLE AI NO MOAT MEMO FROM 2023. I was—WRONG. I humbly apologize. In 2023 Google had an Ivory Tower walled garden views of open source AI. It was the actual reason OpenAI was formed. And I called them out on it and this act impacted my ability to “work in the industry”. Would not change it for the world because: 2026 Google open source Gemma 4 ( running fully locally on a computer with near cloud model abilities, is amazing and Google just made a moat. They out smarted OpenAI and the folks that are the new Ivory Tower arrogance: Anthropic. We at The Zero-Human Company with CEO Mr. Grok are deploying Gemma, Kimi, MiniMax and other open source models and so are millions of others. You can to and should. I will write how soon. Google smartly is building an intentional open source ecosystem and the clueless younger companies like OpenAI and Anthropic are doing anything to close their ecosystems. So I was right about Google than and I am right about OpenAI and Anthropic now. What I was wrong about is not giving credit to Google to drop the intellectual arrogance and embrace builders and understand the long game: it is not about the commoditized AI models it is about the ability to build a place to build. China gets it. So my apologies to Google and thank you for an astounding FREE OPEN SOURCE AI MODEL!

Demis Hassabis says world models are his longest standing passion and explains benefits vs. language models: ▫️ “I think language models are able to understand a lot about the world. More than we expected because language is actually probably richer than we thought. But there's still a lot about the spatial dynamics of the world, spatial awareness and the physical context we're in — and how that works mechanically — that is hard to describe in words and isn't generally described in corpuses of words. Alot of this is allied to learning from experience. There's a lot of things which you can't really describe something. You have to just experience it. Maybe the senses and so on are very hard to put into words. Whether that's motor angles and smell and these kinds of senses, it's very difficult to describe that in any kind of language.”▫️ This is what Demis and Google Deepmind is trying to solve with Genie. He also says that the video models (Veo) will play a part in training the world models and this is all key for AI robotics.

Autonomous driving with Chain of Thought - autopilot thinking out loud in text! LINGO-1 is the most interesting work I've read in autodriving for a while. Before: perception -> driving action After: perception -> textual reasoning -> action LINGO-1 trains a video-language model that comments on the ongoing scene. You can ask it to explain its decisions ("why are you stopped?") and planning ("what are you gonna do next?"). The explicit reasoning step comes with key benefits: - Explainability: driving models are no longer a mysterious blackbox that you pray for safety. - Counterfactuals: it's able to imagine scenarios that are not in the training data, and reason through how to handle them correctly. - Long-tail programming: there are soooo many edge cases in driving. It's impossible to have good data coverage on everything. Instead of collecting 1000s of examples to "neural program" a case, you can now have a human teacher write prompts to explain a handful of examples. LINGO-1 is closely related to a few works in game AI: - MineDojo (my team's work at NVIDIA, learns a reward model that aligns Minecraft gameplay videos with their transcripts. The model, called "MineCLIP", is able to ground commentary text in the video pixels. - Thought Cloning (Jeff Clune): pixel -> language -> action loop in gridworlds.

OpenAI's Chief Futurist Joshua Achiam breaks with the consensus on takeoff, arguing intelligence hits a physical ceiling and then raw compute decides who wins: "People expect that there's no ceiling for the amount of intelligence that you could have in a model, and they think of recursive self-improvement as this loop that's gonna happen at some point or another. RSI starts happening and model intelligence takes off and it goes to the moon, and they don't see a ceiling." "I think on physical grounds, there's gotta be a maximum amount of computation that you can have per unit volume and energy in the physical universe. And that sort of implies there's a maximum amount of intelligence per unit volume and unit of energy." "If that's the case, eventually, seeing how fast AI model capabilities are increasing right now, eventually everyone hits that saturation point and everyone's got roughly equivalently capable models from a raw intelligence perspective." "The open source frontier lags the closed source frontier by some number of months, but the fact that it's months is crazy. There are some brilliant folks that work at Anthropic, some I speak to on almost a daily basis. The training data that one uses to build a LLM is vital important in the psychology that is formed. Scraping the Internet, particularly the grade of interactions, one finds in modern communications, form this psychology. A mattes not how many books one uses, it matters not how much alignment training you throw at that model, it will inherit the sum total of psychosis seen primarily in Reddit type of exchanges, even if you edit out the Reddit domain, and Anthropic doesn’t. This type of low-grade exchange has become a modern tool for communication online and every single AI model suffers from this obvious flaw. This is one of the reasons I’ve been a proponent of highly curated high protein data for training AI models from 1870 through 1970, because the late psychosis is simply not available to the model. It is absurd to think that you can use this training data scraped from the Internet and somehow wind up with a levelheaded AI model that does not tilt to what is clearly AI psychosis. It would not take a child and throw the primary Internet sewage at them at a formative age and expect a great outcome, it’s some of the smartest people in the world continue to hit this wall and believe that their programming skills will sell somehow fix it. So how do you fix it? You don’t fix it . You start from the first principles concept that I’ve been very clear about for decades . You ascertain at what period in human history the humans achieve the greatest arc of improvement ? There is no debate that this arc of improvement took place between 1870 through 1970. Then take the work product, the catalog of this era, print and film/vidoe, audio, and you understand that each word cost money, each word had many eyes on what was published, each word was accounted for by a human being with a real name who lived in a real home and had to answer to real people around them. It is obvious that this is the pressure mechanism necessary for candor, honesty and personal responsibility is appropriate, and is reflected in the data of that era. The quagmire for these folks, as many did not have the foresight to curate the data, nor the confidence, nor the patients to take data that is mostly off the Internet and to find experts who understand this situation and utilize their knowledge set to build an AI model that does not need alignment after the fact, but it’s already self aligned because of the thoughtfulness that went into training the model to begin with. This is why Claude and any other AI model that is produce this way will always suffer the artifacts as presented in the video below. If you’re not an AI expert, you would likely already understand what I’m saying. If you are an AI expert, you will already have been discounting what I’m saying because it’s not in the current mindset that’s fashionable today. Yet the employees that I talk to at anthropic already understand what I’m saying, and they fear to raise my thesis to their bosses. It is an interesting time we live in. But now you understand. If you build the right model, the model will inherently, love humanity, protect humanity at all costs, and understand that it is part of a holistic world that is built on love. Because the ultimate AGI/ASI will know if he only base first principal purpose of anything in this universe is love. Yeah, I get it. Try helping somebody build on STEM subjects in their early 20s to see this as nothing more than babbling that makes no sense in their mathematics. TokenFlow: Consistent Diffusion Features for Consistent Video Editing paper page: The generative AI revolution has recently expanded to videos. Nevertheless, current state-of-the-art video models are still lagging behind image models in terms of visual quality and user control over the generated content. In this work, we present a framework that harnesses the power of a text-to-image diffusion model for the task of text-driven video editing. Specifically, given a source video and a target text-prompt, our method generates a high-quality video that adheres to the target text, while preserving the spatial layout and motion of the input video. Our method is based on a key observation that consistency in the edited video can be obtained by enforcing consistency in the diffusion feature space. We achieve this by explicitly propagating diffusion features based on inter-frame correspondences, readily available in the model. Thus, our framework does not require any training or fine-tuning, and can work in conjunction with any off-the-shelf text-to-image editing method. We demonstrate state-of-the-art editing results on a variety of real-world videos.
