Microsoft invented the knowledge worker to sell more office software. That's not a conspiracy theory. That's what happened. Bill Gates vision was simple: put a PC on every desk. Not to make computing beautiful (that was Steve Jobs). Just to sell more software. Word. Excel. Email. People went to tutorials to learn these tools. Then companies made them the price of admission for employment. The entire concept of an office career was a sales strategy. Now AI is replacing the very work Microsoft created. And maybe that's not a bad thing. Because sitting in a cubicle using Excel was never how humans were supposed to find purpose. The most curious people have the most fulfilling lives. Not the richest. Not the smartest. The whole knowledge economy was built to sell software. What happens when the software sells itself?

Satya Nadella says that when Microsoft put a billion dollars into OpenAI in 2019, everybody thought the money was being burned: "Who would have thought in 2019 that there is a smart idea to go put a billion dollars?" "Everybody thought we were just burning a billion dollars." "It turns out some of these things when they work, they are celebrated and when they don't work, nobody knows about it." "The thing that we were obsessed about and Bill, in particular, was obsessed about was natural language." "When the OpenAI team started pivoting from what, at that time, they were doing a lot more RL and what have you, interestingly enough, they switched to natural language and scaling laws. And that's when we sort of picked it up." What triggered the billion dollars was a research team changing what it worked on. Satya Nadella: "We are well on our way building our MAI models our goal is to basically hill climb from the bottom, by the way, not distilling anything." "My advice is more like use all but be independent of all. I would pull out a model and see whether I can retain the eval. If I can't, that means you really are dependent on something that may or may not be yours."
