I will say, the most commonly exhibited form of creativity we see from humans is interpolation, or combining things in unique or novel ways, which AI seems really good at. We perform extrapolation too, but not as frequently as interpolation, from what I've seen.

there's also the issue of synthetic a priori propositions, which I don't think AI models can generate yet

He has the most patents at Microsoft. Thousands. Double the number of the second person. In other words, he knows what he is talking about.

Here’s the thing. I am a satirist. I have been writing jokes for others and myself for almost 15 years. I ran a proper satire venture (site, comics) for years. Until the day AI can consistently (not occasionally or by accident) make me laugh and contemplate, my mind will not be blown by whatever they say. Satire, parody, sarcasm, wit, these are at the pinnacle of human creativity (alongside other artistic quests). AI has been conquering each of these other arts one by one but it still sucks at making people laugh, except by accident (like weird gen AI video outputs). And it certainly isn’t making any satirists laugh. I look forward to writing to Mr Horvitz in 18 months.

I want to thank you again for curating these things for us. 🙏

I'm happy if people find them interesting as I do

Some will disagree but I will die on this hill....If a system can autonomously recognize patterns, relationships and structures in the data while making accurate predictions. Then that system has understanding.

Even though his reputation is high, I do question his objectivity since Microsoft has shovelled so much money into the OpenAI fire pit.

Dang. I’m very excited and also slightly nervous (just because change sometimes implies unknowns). But I’m mainly excited. 😊

I am ready
