Ancient Ice in Scorching Sands: How Persians Built Desert Freezers at least 2,500 Years Ago! While Romans were mastering grain storage, Persian engineers were doing something that sounds impossible, making ice in 40 degrees Celsius desert heat, without electricity, without refrigeration, without any modern technology. They built massive dome structures called yakhchals that could store 5,000 tons of ice through scorching summers lasting six months. These weren’t just holes in the ground, they were precision engineered thermal machines that defied physics. Here’s how they worked. In winter, Persians would flood shallow pools at night when desert temperatures plummeted below freezing. By morning, they’d harvest sheets of ice and rush them into the Yakhchal before sunrise. But storing ice isn’t the hard part. Keeping it frozen through summer is. The genius was in the architecture. The domes stood 60 feet tall, with walls 6 feet thick, made of a special mortar called saruj, a mix of sand, clay, egg whites, lime, goat hair, and ash. I want to put it on the record that I am not the only one saying public infrastructure has collapsed due to corruption in Zimbabwe’s government. Meet Justice Loice Matanda-Moyo. She is a Zimbabwean judge, former head of the Zimbabwean Anti-Corruption Commission, and is currently the head of Zimbabwe’s National Prosecution Service. Here, she says Zimbabwe is in trouble because of corruption. She states that it remains one of the major barriers preventing Zimbabwe from succeeding as an economy and is causing its public infrastructure to deteriorate. Justice Loice Matanda-Moyo specifically mentions the collapse of public health and schools and points out that corruption is the root cause. She goes on to say that government figures estimate the loss of revenue due to corruption at US$1.8 billion. We know that it is more but let us work with the government’s own figure of US$1.8 billion. All of Zimbabwe’s central/referral hospitals need only US$60 million a year to run smoothly without any shortages. US$1.8 billion could run Zimbabwe’s central hospitals for thirty years. US$1.8 billion could build 1,800 kilometres of tarred road from scratch. Out of Zimbabwe’s six central hospitals, five were built by the colonial governments. The only central hospital built by ZANUPF is Chitungwiza, which was an upgrade. US$1.8 billion could build seven central hospitals like Parirenyatwa or Sally Mugabe Hospital with a capacity of 1,800 beds. South Africa is building Tygerberg Central Hospital in the Western Cape for US$260 million. It is way advanced than Zimbabwean hospitals which were built over decades ago. Sally Mugabe Hospital is 117 years old, Parirenyatwa is 72 years old, Mpilo Hospital is 82 years old, UBH is 85 years old, and Ingutsheni is 117 years old. Chitungwiza is 42 years old; it was upgraded to a central hospital 18 years ago. These are Zimbabwe’s central/referral hospitals. ZANUPF has never built a single central hospital from the ground, it only upgraded Chitungwiza. This is what corruption has done to Zimbabwe in the words of Justice Loice Matanda-Moyo who heads Zimbabwe’s National Prosecution Service and is the former head of the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission and was also a High Court Judge.

From Martin County, KY to Delbarton, WV — the coal industry’s mess keeps poisoning our region, and politicians keep failing us. In 2000, Martin County, Kentucky suffered one of the worst coal slurry spills in U.S. history - over 300 million gallons of toxic sludge (loaded with arsenic, mercury, and more) flooded the waterways after a Massey impoundment failed. Rivers turned black, aquatic life died by the millions, and the drinking water for tens of thousands was contaminated. More than 25 years later? Many residents are still drinking bottled water. 96% rely on it for drinking because the tap water remains unreliable, with frequent outages, line breaks, and quality issues. They pay some of the highest water rates in Kentucky for water they often can’t trust. When disasters like the recent orange water crisis in Delbarton, Mingo County, WV hit, it doesn’t stop at the state line. These creeks and rivers connect all of us across eastern Kentucky, southern West Virginia, and beyond. The pollution flows downstream. The health risks don’t check borders. Some locals believe these incidents aren’t just accidents, they suspect old mines are being allowed (or even encouraged) to flood and discharge so companies can more easily extract rare earth minerals from the acid mine drainage and waste. While the world scrambles for materials for EVs, magnets, and tech, our hollows pay the price with orange rivers and undrinkable water. Whether it’s Kentucky politics dragging its feet on infrastructure or West Virginia downplaying blowouts and acid mine drainage, our mountain communities keep paying the price for decades of extraction. Coal built this region, but its legacy left us with ruined water, struggling economies, and broken promises. We need real investment in clean water systems that actually work not more studies and excuses.
