MIT PhD student Alex Zhang admits current AI models might already be AGI with the right harness around them: "To an extent, the answer is kind of yes. The strongest thing I can say is that we can do a lot more with the current models that we have."... show more

We might have AGI with the the right definition around it *

the harness is doing more of the heavy lifting than the base weights in half these results. not really a secret anymore.

it’s pretty obvious to me AGI is already here (and well has been for some months) undistinguishable from taking a not particularly dumb person on the street and asking yourself whether it’s generally intelligent or not the things also work for days at a time already, again indistinguishable from a human and much faster the next step is somewhere between AGI and ASI, maybe artificial general genius, but even this may be wishful thinking secretely hoping that we don’t get ASI in the next 12 months

Great point that’s 100% true

i think he's right tbh. definitely the next crop should be in reach

If you put models in actually challenging settings you will realize that to no extent are we close to AGI. A long way to go in absence of a breakthrough.

I mean... using Hermes well since April. I feel like we are already dancing with it

"AGI with the right harness" means the harness is doing the alignment work the model can't — that's a bigger claim than most people in this clip are catching. At what point does harness behavior become the lab's responsibility rather than just a scaffolding problem?

Great point

The harness argument reframes AGI from a capability problem to an engineering one. If that holds, the bottleneck was never raw intelligence, it was orchestration, memory, and tool use around a static model. Years of scaling debates may have been solving the wrong problem.
