mono immediately shows this project *and* studio's Yama no Susume pedigree, with constantly lively character animation yet no regard for design consistency. The way the spacious layouts are built & utilized, plus the looseness in spots, also bring Bocchi to mind. All good traits!

Bocchi the Shot...

Ofc mono's main point of reference is Yurucamp, as another Afro work. While it has that built-in relationship with the outdoors too, the overall tone is less contemplative and chill - which again, makes the so far very ambitious (please be alright...) chirpy animation a great fit

Even setting aside the sheer ambition & fitting rhythm, the adaptation feels deliberate. The punchiest moment in the first chapter is how, after everything is delivered in 4koma form, the omnidirectional camera gets a spread that feels like a mundane yet big change in their lives

The anime's delivery of that is fine, but since framing tricks are less natural, they offer a great equivalent through the addition of the moment the protagonist fell in love with photography. Satisfying buildup with wind blowing cel trees + her life literally becoming brighter

Willingness to embrace flat shading lets them accentuate specific sources of light (often tied to the camera / the lifestyle tied to this new hobby) in a similarly effective way. Also, la creatura awakens

Dangerous cats in this show, but even that leads to cool shots with funky perspective

Organic drawings across the board, sometimes so blatantly so that you can immediately tell an animation sicko was there

Fun show!! Hope it's sustainable
