M12 sends the call in slow Morse, then transmits the cyphered message at high speed

I used to drink beer and listen to numbers stations. Tell me I'm not an RF geek.

Have you ever thought to give the audio to an AI and try decode something? I also live in Milan and I could help you in this. Good job for sharing these with us by the way

Love the look of that radio - despite a modern HAM radio - like my Yaesu FTDX-101 with spectrum display is a lot easier to navigate

@n4hpg Which is probably an identifier to which OTP pad to use for decoding the ciphertext. Like unit 258, block 1. Or page 258, paragraph 1... 😁 Now just need to find the pads source somewhere...

@n4hpg 1 is the number of messages about to be transmitted. With M12, it can be 0, 1, or 2. 258 should be the recipient's ID. So, "258 1" should mean "Hey 258, a message is about to be sent to you."

Id love that radio. I dont have one that cool, but I have these ex Military use ones in my collection. They work of course. A Watkins-Johnson, and a Racal.

So what is the message?

Shortwave Observer's profile picture
Shortwave Observer2 days ago

The message is OTP-cyphered. Only the recipient holds the key to decrypt it.

We used to trail "auxiliary intelligence gatherers" or AIG's in the Bering Sea. They always were masked as "fishing vessels" and their call signs began with a "u" or a "v". Their code was sent on side-keys and was so fast that you could only make out the V or U.
