Speaking before the National Assembly Committee of National Defence and Foreign Relations, Haji raised alarm that Security agencies are dangerously underfunded and are struggling without the resources needed to act effectively. This lack of investment leaves Kenya exposed to evolving threats ranging from terrorism and cyber warfare to transnational crime. Recent events paint a dire picture: In February, dozens went missing from Turkana after a militia attack from Ethiopia. On April 29, five quarry workers were killed by al-Shabaab in Mandera. On May 2, five police officers were shot dead in Lamu. On March 15, more than 100 al-Shabaab fighters raided Mangai village in Lamu. These are just a few examples. The United States has been hit with a tsunami of meth, and sharing expertise, intelligence, and capabilities across borders is critical to turning this crisis around. These missions are incredibly dangerous, especially when confronting violent cartel networks on their own turf. Tragically, this operation resulted in the loss of two Americans and two Mexican officers. We honor their service, sacrifice, and courage. Rest in peace. Since he can’t control the state, we’ll do it for him. We saw union activists and organizers be involved in these efforts to resist our operations. So, there is something going on here where you have this sophisticated resistance being mounted against the federal government. And we’re looking into that. We’re going to look into who the leaders of the operations are.

Yesterday evening, I inspected the vandalized section of the Lameco Flyover in Osogbo. I commend the hardworking engineers from the Ministry of Works who have swiftly mobilized to the site to ensure the immediate repair of the damaged section. During my visit, I received direct briefing from the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Works, Engr. Bashiru Bello, on the circumstances surrounding the act of vandalism. It is unfortunate that some saboteurs, whose sole objective is to undermine our developmental strides and destroy the legacy of this administration, would resort to attacking public infrastructure built with taxpayers’ resources. I enjoin security agencies to strengthen the protection of public infrastructure across the state and ensure that those responsible for this criminal act are identified, arrested, and brought to justice. These projects belong to the people of Osun State, and every well-meaning citizen has a responsibility to protect them from acts of sabotage and vandalism. My administration remains resolute in its commitment to delivering quality infrastructure and will not be deterred by the actions of those who seek to impede our progress.

JD Vance says in his interview with Hannity that “the very best” security guarantee for Ukraine is to give the United States “economic upside” via the “minerals deal.” He argued economic investment offers better security than military aid. Here are the issues with this. The “minerals deal” won’t lead to security guarantees or additional assistance from the U.S. Trump has said this many times and Putin would not accept these terms. This is something Ukraine must accept. In addition, this theory that if American companies are going to be mining natural resources on Ukrainian land, Putin won’t attack is also a fantasy. There will be no mining operations because there will be no investment capital to fund these operations. I am an investment professional. I work with Sovereign Wealth Funds and other large institutional investors in private markets investments. They traditionally would be the investors in natural resource and infrastructure development. None will invest in Ukraine until a lasting peace is established. Any thing short would be a breach of their fiduciary duties. Ukraine can ask some of the European allies or Canada that have Sovereign Wealth Funds if what I am telling you is true. The U.S. also doesn’t have a history of using its military to protect companies operating in war zones. They will instead tell them to leave. Ukraine already gave up its nukes for security assistance from the U.S. with the goal of protecting its 1991 borders and the U.S. never honored that. Now the U.S. wants Ukraine’s to give up its sovereign wealth for a hope and a prayer? I really hope Ukraine does not make the mistake and sign a minerals deal with no explicit security guarantees or additional aid. This would be a tragedy. It would be a tragedy.

We visited the scene of the explosion which occurred at about 7.44 pm yesterday, 16 January 2024 in Bodija, Ibadan. This unfortunate incident resulted in death and injury to residents in the vicinity and also affected properties. We have already deployed first responders and all relevant agencies within Oyo State to carry out comprehensive search and rescue operations. These operations will continue throughout the night. Earth moving equipment, ambulances, emergency lights, and security were deployed to the scene of the incident. The wounded and injured are being treated and moved to public and private hospitals within Ibadan. Medical personnel are on standby at these hospitals to provide all needed assistance to the injured. We have visited UCH to see some of those injured during the incident. In total, we have 77 injured victims so far, most of whom were treated and discharged and 2 fatalities. May their souls rest in peace and may God give their loved ones the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss. I have directed that the medical bills of all victims be covered by the government. We will also be providing temporary accommodation for those whose houses were affected and ensuring that they are supported to rebuild their lives. Preliminary investigations by the security agencies revealed that illegal miners occupying one of the houses in Bodija had stored explosive devices there which caused the blast. The investigations are ongoing. All those found culpable for this will be brought to book. I urge all residents to please call 615 for any emergencies they may be experiencing at this time and to remain calm and stay away from the immediate scene of the incident to allow rescue operations to be carried out without interference. We are grateful to the first responders, security personnel and all those who are at the scene to assist with the rescue operations as well as the medical personnel taking care of the injured. Please say a prayer for those who have been affected by this disaster as we continue with the rescue operations.
