Ireland is racist…. The new kind of racism to bring about replacement migration. Selective outrage and selective attention. Two men die in the same city. The response couldn’t look more different. One case dominates headlines, sparks political statements, vigils, protests and international discussion. The other passes with barely more than local coverage and scattered online comments. Naturally, people begin asking why. It creates the awareness that some stories are elevated because they support a wider narrative — about racism, society, or institutions — while others are quietly forgotten. And when people notice that imbalance, trust starts to erode and the awakening begins. Not every event is framed the same way. Not every victim receives equal public sympathy or media focus. Increasingly, people feel the news is doing more than reporting facts, it’s shaping which stories matter….. but to whom…. and for what outcome?

I just caught this CBC segment addressing youth unemployment rates and tying it to boomers who won’t retire and clear room for the younger generations. If you’ve been following me I have said the same thing and I can’t believe the CBC sounds like me now. Boomers were hired out of high school and trained on the job then artificially created job security by developing the Human Resources Industrial Complex which made the exact same careers harder and harder to achieve with more regulations, more education, and more certifications. There are almost zero entry level jobs for Gen Z in order to build a resume with experience and references to move up in the world. Boomers need to get out of the way already. They predominantly voted for the policies that created the cost of living crisis. They need to own it and live in it.

One radical idea: end gerrymandering through at-large U.S. House seats apportioned by partisan voting patterns. Example: 30 percent of a state votes for Democrats? There are 10 seats in that state in total? 3 go to Democrats. The same would apply for my party. It’s fair, reflects the way people really vote and is more representative than the salamander shaped districts we currently see. Math is fair, everyone understands it, and if voters want to change the apportionment, they have to register and vote differently.

Great explanation of the China-Japan altercation by Chas Freeman, imho the wisest diplomat ever produced by the US (he's had many roles, including Asst. Secretary of Defense and famously the main interpreter for Nixon during his epochal 1972 China visit) He first describes in his speech the origin of the altercation as being "Japan's threat to extend its defense perimeter to include Taiwan." Afterwards he goes into a longer explanation in the Q&A in which he said: "Prime Minister Takaichi... answer[ed] a hypothetical question in the Diet by suggesting that Taiwan was now once again part of Japan for defense purposes. And this of course would embolden people in Taiwan to continue to pursue independence rather than reassociation with the rest of China, and therefore it is a strategic change of some significance." In effect, as he explains, it's unacceptable to China in several ways: 1) With regards to Japan's colonial history vis a vis Taiwan, it's especially provocative to now once more make Taiwan part of Japan's territory for defense purposes. 2) Because it emboldens independentist forces in Taiwan and therefore makes war MORE likely. This is Japan basically telling independentists: you can go ahead and declare independence, if war breaks out as a result we have your back. If you want an analogy, it's as if Macron announced officially that the French army would militarily defend Catalonia from Spain if it's seceded. 3) Last but not least, it fundamentally challenges the post-WWII settlement, on which the world order is based. As Freeman explains, Taiwan was recovered from Japan under the Cairo and Potsdam declarations - Allied war aims that the U.S. and China fought and bled for together. By re-extending its defense perimeter to Taiwan, Japan is effectively seeking to reverse the outcome of WWII.

🚨 The Interview That Raised More Questions Than Answers The first mistake Tabz made, in my view, was appearing on national TV while allegedly under the influence. Whether that appearance was intentional or not, it seems to have done more harm than good. Instead of clearing the air, it left many people with more questions than answers. For those who already suspected he could be a state agent, the interview did little to change that perception. If anything, Canary may have unintentionally reinforced the doubts. Sometimes growth means finding your people more than once.” Every meaningful change eventually forces the same question: “Do I want to move forward on my own, or do I want to go back with my friends?” One of the most honest conversations I’ve heard about why so few people actually change.

My cinema is not psychological, it is epic; the individual in it is not psychoanalyzed but placed within a historical context. My characters assume all the elements of epic cinema or, if I may say so, those of epic poetry, typically featuring clear-cut persona. In Homer, Odysseus is a shrewd conniver, Achilles is brave, loyal to his friends-and these characteristics never change. The same with Brecht whose characters are larger than life; they serve as carriers of history or ideas. My characters are not being analyzed, they are not tormented, like Bergman's. They are more humane. They search for lost things, all that was lost in the rupture between desire and reality. Until not very long ago the history of the world was based on desire; the desire to change the world one way or another. Now at the end of the century we realize that whatever was desired never really happened, and it did not happen for reasons that I am unable to explain. Perhaps it was impossible to change things using the specific methods that were employed at the time, but in any case, we are left with the experience of our failure, with the ashes of the disappointment of dreams that never materialized. My last three films reflect this taste of ashes, leaving the desire to be pursued in some future time, in the next discourse. My writing and Bergman's do not relate. In his films there is a strong metaphysical element which identifies the search for the father figure with the search for God or the denial of God. I think that in my own work, the father figure does not represent a goal in itself; the purpose of my films is to find a reason to exist. My films are not as metaphysical. They are, in a strange way, more existential than Bergman's. This is certainly the case for the trilogy- "Voyage to Cythera" (1984), "The Beekeeper" (1986), and "Landscape in the Mist" (1988)". Do I feel less or more bullish about tariffs? Here's the way I look at it. It's very simple, very black and white. 10 to 15% tariffs equate to the same value-added taxes that most countries put on American goods all around the world, so if we whack them back at 10 to 15%, which is what the EU deal was, no problem. Anything more than that, big problem. Those don't work, but I'm a rational guy, assuming that Trump is using access to the world's largest consumer market as a head-squeezing device. So if we end up next week with a Canadian deal of 10 to 15%, good deal. It's gonna be fine for both countries, and that's why I say let's wait. Who's gonna negotiate 190 deals in six months? Impossible. We just want the headline number and that's what we're waiting for.

During my meeting with UK Secretary of State for Defense John Healey, I briefed him on Russia’s overnight strike on our energy infrastructure and people. Moscow is trying to use cold weather as a tool of terror, which is why work on additional air defense capabilities for Ukraine is now an urgent priority. We know which partners have the relevant missiles and equipment, and I am sincerely grateful to the United Kingdom for its readiness to help. We also discussed how a British contingent could be deployed to operate alongside French forces if diplomacy works to end the war. It is crucial that the framework for ending the war includes a clear response from the allies should Russian aggression be repeated. I thank the Secretary of State, his team, and the Government for their strong support throughout all these years of the full-scale invasion, and for the truly successful projects we are implementing together, including in the area of joint drone production.
