Today, our hearts are heavy. Sheriff Christopher A. Blackmon and everyone at the Osceola County Sheriff's Office are mourning the loss of K-9 Athena. She was a devoted Bloodhound whose loyal service made a lasting impact on our agency and the community we serve. Athena joined the Osceola County Sheriff's Office in 2021 and always answered the call. She searched through woods, darkness, and tough conditions, never giving up. Her instincts and hard work helped find missing children, vulnerable adults, and others in need. For many families, Athena brought hope and happy reunions. For Deputy Luis Morales-Torres, Athena was more than just a K-9. She was his partner, his companion, and a loyal friend. They responded to many calls together and shared a special bond built on trust and understanding that only a handler and their K-9 can share. Deputy Morales-Torres shared these heartfelt words: "Athena was a phenomenal partner. She helped us find the lost and the hurt. She is gone too soon, but has served the citizens of this county faithfully. Rest easy, Athena… We have it from here." Losing a partner leaves a real emptiness. The place where eager paws waited is now quiet. The leash will not lead another search, and the familiar face that greeted each day with energy and dedication is gone. Athena did not look for recognition or praise. She always gave her best whenever she was needed. She served with courage, heart, and a devotion that is rare. Today we mourn her loss, but we also remember her meaningful life. Her legacy continues in everyone she helped, every family she comforted, and every deputy who worked with her. We send our thoughts and prayers to Deputy Luis Morales-Torres, our K-9 Unit, and everyone who knew Athena. Thank you, Athena, for every mile you tracked, every life you helped save, and every moment you spent helping others. You have completed your watch. You will never be forgotten. Rest easy, sweet girl. End of Watch.

ALERT: Jury broke down in tears today while footage of Tanner Horner killing 7-year-old Athena Strand was played. They were also shown footage of Horner telling his boss that he had “thrown up” in the truck, requesting the same vehicle the next day. The footage of the abduction reportedly showed Horner dropping off a package, a Barbie Christmas gift. Horner allegedly picked up Athena and placed her in the back of the FedEx truck and closed the door. He is then seen whispering something to her as she is moved from the back of the truck to the front. Athena then asks, “Are you a kidnapper?” Horner told her to sit down and not scream, or he would hurt her. Seeing this caused some of her family members to leave the courtroom. Horner then covered the camera so only audio could be heard. After trying to make conversation about how old Athena was, where she goes to school, Horner says, “You're really pretty. You know that?” Horner then asked Athena to take off her shirt. She said “No” and asked for her mom. Athena was then heard crying, screaming, and loud banging was coming from the back of the truck, according to local reports. Athena's parents, Jacob Strand and Maitlyn Gandy, have both testified in the trial, but they did not sit in the courtroom while the video was played. After cleaning the back of the truck with some kind of spray and a roll of paper towels, Horner was heard on the phone, claiming he had eaten bad food and gotten sick, and requesting the same FedEx truck the next day.

ATHENA CLARKE’S CLOSING MESSAGE TO BROOKLYN "I was born and raised by parents who came here chasing the American Dream. I’ve seen what happens when that dream slips away, when hardworking families are ignored, when our streets feel unsafe, and when City Hall makes decisions behind closed doors. That’s why I’m running, to give Brooklyn families a voice again." - Athena Clarke, Candidate for City Council, District 46 Here’s why Brooklyn needs Athena Clarke: ON HOUSING: While NYC Democrat machine politicians promise “affordable housing” and sneak in homeless shelters without community input, Athena will demand transparency and fight for real housing solutions that protect neighborhoods and families. ON SAFETY: While City Hall ties the hands of our NYPD and ignores rising crime, Athena stands with law enforcement and families who deserve safe streets, safe schools, and safe parks. ON SMALL BUSINESS: While Democrat leaders push endless taxes and red tape, Athena will champion local entrepreneurs, the backbone of Brooklyn’s economy, and cut through the bureaucracy killing jobs. ON ACCOUNTABILITY: While insiders protect each other, Athena will fight for you, restoring common sense, fiscal discipline, and honesty to city government. Athena Clarke represents Brooklyn’s comeback. The Democrat machine represents everything that’s holding it back. 🗳 TODAY IS ELECTION DAY. ✅ Vote for people over party lines ✅ Vote for safety over chaos ✅ Vote for neighborhoods over backroom deals ✅ Vote for the American Dream 👉 Find your polling place: 👉 Bring 3 friends with you to vote 👉 Share this message with every Brooklyn voter you know
