@colossal Do you have any plans to create a Chickenosaurus? Give it sharp teeth, a tail, front claws on its hands, and maybe hormone for bigger growth? This might be the closest thing to a dinosaur.

Inside what were believed to be ordinary coyotes, scientists discovered the lost genetic diversity of the Red Wolf. These animals are now known as Red ‘Ghost’ Wolves. And thanks to the unique DNA they carry, and tools and technologies developed in the dire wolf project, we have a path forward to potentially help recover the Red Wolf population.

These new arrivals are part of the SAFE American Red Wolf program—a collaborative effort to save the most endangered wolf species on the planet. Zoo Knoxville is proud to be part of this essential conservation work. With fewer than 20 Red Wolves in the wild and under 300 in human care, every pup counts. We’re giving the new family plenty of space, but early signs are good—Cirilla is proving to be a great mom, and the pups are growing strong. 🐾

Huge win for red wolves! NC is moving forward with wildlife crossings along Highway 64, which runs straight through red wolf territory. These crossings let wolves safely pass over or under the road. Congrats to the Center for Biological Diversity and all the partners.

Some beautiful footage from the dam of a remote beaver pond in early spring this year. You can hear the sounds of spring all around this pond, which we call “Capsaicin Pond” (story behind that below). But this is more than just pretty footage...the footage highlights an interesting dynamic in the wolf packs in this area...because all the wolves in the video belong to different packs but they all have a history with one another. Notably, this pond is in an area of overlap between the Half-Moon and Lightfoot Pack territories. The first wolf in the video is the new breeding male of the Half-Moon Pack (now dubbed Wolf Y15C after we collared him this spring). He and his mate kicked out Wolf V094, the longstanding breeding male of the Half-Moon Pack, in Fall 2024. And Wolf V094 just so happens to be the 2nd wolf in this video, and Wolf Y15C’s mate happens to be V094’s daughter. Small world! Wolf V094 was a lone wolf at the time this video was taken but he joined the Peatlands Pack later this past summer. But you can tell he is getting to be an old fellow. And then the last wolf on camera is the breeding female of the Lightfoot Pack (Wolf B3S). She recently became the breeding female of the Lightfoot Pack after kicking out her mother in Fall 2024. And as it turns out, her mate is the son of Wolf V094. For a few months last winter, V094 actually traveled around with this female and his son in the Lightfoot territory but then for whatever reason, moved on. Now, as for the name, let’s just say someone on our crew was out doing fieldwork near this pond a few years ago and had a little issue with their bear spray...it was a long walk out for them with some blurry eyes that were feeling the burn...

A gray wolf walked into Sequoia National Park this spring for the first time in over a CENTURY. Her name is BEY03F. This is a big deal, wolves haven’t set foot here in a hundred years, and she just did it on her own. 🐺 She’s three years old, alone, looking for a mate. Months before her family was killed by the state after livestock attacks, she’d already left, already walking south alone — gone before it happened. She crossed the Mojave and made history in LA County. Now she’s made history in Sequoia. Still walking, still looking, still free. Nobody released these wolves. Nobody funded a program. California hunted, trapped, and poisoned every wolf out of this state by the 1920s, and they walked themselves back anyway, starting in 2011, all the way from Oregon. That’s what she is. Proof it can still happen. She’s protected today under the Endangered Species Act. That’s good. But what worries me is the direction this administration is taking that same law — this July, they took habitat destruction out of the definition of “harm.” And her own family’s death proves the state can still pull the trigger itself. One wolf. A hundred years of silence, broken. It’s so good to see the wolf return. Now, let’s hope she finds a mate. 🐺 #DemsUnited

Neat footage of a black wolf, a fairly rare observation in our area where 98-99% of wolves are gray. We actually collared this wolf (now dubbed Wolf G11E) later in the summer, the first black wolf we ever collared on our project. As we knew when we collared him, G11E was not part of a pack but rather a lone wolf wandering around, which is pretty common for 1-2 year old males like G11E.
