What happened to Senator Alex Padilla is an attempt to intimidate anyone with a dissenting view of this Administration and stop them from exercising their First Amendment rights. We will not be silenced.

The Trump Administration is using Canary Mission, an anonymous site that blacklists and doxxes individuals, to target dissenting students with deportation for exercising their First Amendment right of free speech. This shameless, authoritarian display is a page right out of the McCarthy playbook.

🚨 ICE is on the North Side of Chicago…in Albany Park…trying to “warn” an Alderperson for blowing a whistle to alert her constituents that ICE was in the neighborhood. In other words: federal agents are now trying to intimidate an elected official for exercising her First Amendment right to symbolic speech. Because nothing says “land of the free” like ICE threatening local government for warning people that ICE is… threatening local government.

The United States should not jail anyone for exercising free speech. I will continue to advocate for Mr. Sarsour’s immediate release from ICE detention.

The First Amendment gives Americans the right to peacefully observe & film ICE operations. Visiting Minnesota today because the Trump Administration sent a poorly trained paramilitary force to harass & intimidate people. Minnesotans exercising their rights said HELL NO.

The First Amendment is just branding at this point. Speech is only “free” until it threatens power. They’ll let you scream into a void all you want, but the second your words make an impact, they’ll move to silence you immediately.
