Although the message is clearly scripted, his accent and the way he reads strongly suggest he does not speak the language even at an intermediate level, despite reports that he has been trying to learn Arabic for a while now. It is puzzling that, despite years of interaction with Iraqi politicians, neither the Talabani brothers nor the younger Barzanis speak Arabic. Interestingly nowadays many younger Kurds, especially in Erbil, speak at least basic Arabic due to increased interaction with Iraqi Arabs. The Barzani cousins and the Talabanis are said to have hired tutors, yet their Arabic remains weak.

Iraqi Kurdish politician Bafel Talabani: Iran thought the talks had been going well. They said this was not a war they were looking forward to, but one they believe they have to fight. For them, it is clearly existential. I got the impression that they were open to some form of peaceful negotiation, which realistically is the only real solution to this issue. As for regime change, at the moment it does not appear to be on the cards, from what I can see. We have seen no uprisings anywhere—nothing of that sort so far. But it is still early days. I expect this operation to be long and very difficult.

Asked by a journalist about proof of the reported strike, Peskov said it was "madness" to claim that no attack had taken place, but declined to present any evidence confirming a drone raid. Ukraine has denied carrying out any drone attack on Putin's residence in Valdai. Peskov also promised a "harsh response," saying Russia "knows how, with what, and when" it will respond to the alleged attack.
