To Allah we belong, and to Him we shall return. The great Egyptian muhaddith, Sheikh Abu Ishaq al-Huwayni, passed away today. This is a great loss for the Muslim world and Ahl al-Hadith. I am at a loss for words, but I will mention one personal memory of mine involving the sheikh, which I was previously asked to keep private. One of the sheikh’s doctors and associates was a family friend, so I had the chance to meet the sheikh and sit beside him on a few occasions. One day, after a public lecture the sheikh gave in Doha, I went to greet the sheikh. His son whispered to the doctor, “The sheikh is about to complete his khatma in the qira’a of Abu Ja’far with Sheikh al-Maasarawi on such-and-such day, and you are invited to the party.” I was invited to the event, but I was busy at the time, which I now regret. Here is an accomplished old sheikh in his sixties with worldwide fame, yet he was still sitting with other scholars and learning the Quran from them. The clip where the sheikh expresses his regret for not devoting his life to the Quran went viral several years ago, and this was but one private endeavor of his to address these feelings of regret. Today, he is relieved from all his troubles, and he departs to His merciful Lord. Allah have mercy on him and all of his righteous predecessors.

With deep sorrow the Muslim community including students from across the globe received news of the passing of Sheikh Bashir bin Ahmed Siddiq earlier this week, the venerable teacher of the Holy Qur’an at Masjid An Nabawi in Madinah. Sheikh Bashir devoted more than six decades of his life to teaching Qur’an recitation within the precincts of the Prophet’s Mosque. He was highly respected for his mastery of tajwīd (rules of Qur’anic recitation), his patience, and his dedication to nurturing students from around the world. Under his guidance, many students went on to become prominent Qur’anic reciters and scholars. Among his students were former and current imams and reciters at the Two Holy Mosques, such as Sheikh Muhammad Ayub, Sheikh Ali Jaber, Sheikh Abdul Muhsin Al-Qasim, Sheikh Salah Al-Budair, and Sheikh Muhammad Al-Mukhtar Al-Shanqiti. Sheikh Bashir passed away on October 1, 2025. His funeral prayers were held at Masjid An Nabawi, the very mosque where he taught for decades and was led by Sheikh Salah Al Budair who he personally requested to lead his Funeral Prayers. He was then laid to rest in Jannat al-Baqīʿ, the sacred cemetery of Madinah, where many of the Prophet’s companions and pious scholars lie. Sheikh Bashir’s legacy is one of quiet excellence and steadfast devotion. His life was a living lesson in how to dedicate oneself to the service of the Qur’an. His impact will continue through his students, whose voices echo in mosques around the world. Many will remember him not only for his knowledge, but for his humility, sincerity, and unwavering commitment to transmitting the beauty of the Book of Allah.

Beyond the ugly side of the clashes, her presence became a symbol of the familial and social bond deeply rooted in Kurdish culture. In an interview yesterday, she shared important details about the hours leading up to, during, and after the clashes on the 22nd. At 58 years old, with a lifetime of wars behind her, she said she had never witnessed such intense shelling and fire at once. The new era of Sheikh Yasir… My students always ask me how do we improve our recitation? How do we improve tune and melody? I tell them to improve their Ahkaam of Tajweed and Makharij and your recitation will improve by 99%. Sheikh Yasir is a prime example. Not that his recitation wasn’t amazing before, but he had mistakes in his Tajweed and now that he has corrected them, his recitation has levelled up greatly. May Allah reward those who advised him on his mistakes and the Sheikh for correcting them.

VIDEO: How we used religion to give Tinubu victory – El-Rufai The former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has said that he and some northern governors used religion as a political tool to give victory to Asiwaju Bola Tinubu in the 2023 presidential election. According to the former governor, the decision to use religion as a political strategy was to help tackle the issue of tribalism and religion in politics in the country. The former governor stated this in a viral video. He was speaking to an audience in the Hausa language in Kaduna at an event before handing over to his successor. He said, “Allah sees our heart, me and Zamfara State Governor, Mutawalle did it because of God and we didn’t do it because of anything. We only do it in order to have solutions to the current religious problem we are having in Nigeria and for us to give South West Muslims a sense of belonging to rule. And it is because of religion that we used that gave Asiwaju victory.” He also noted that the Muslim/Muslim ticket that he used to achieve political success in Kaduna has now been replicated in Nigeria with the emergence of Bola Tinubu as president and Kashim Shetima as vice president. He said, “What we are able to achieve in Kaduna state now has been achieved in Nigeria as a whole. There is no liar that will come and say he will do politics as a Christian and win an election. But Professor Akintola and their leaders came from Lagos and said this is their thought If power is given to the West since we all agreed that it should be given to them the Yoruba people from the South-West have a problem, their Muslims cannot contest, and win an election. A Christian will have to contest and have a Muslim from the North as a vice. They said since from Abiola it had never happened. They said they wanted that and I asked them to bring the person we will support and BAT got the ticket. Yet now, we see factions entering Alawite villages, expelling civilians, and killing them in cold blood. These are the remnants of the regime’s brutality, not the actions of true mujahideen. Are the people who remained in their homes not safe? By God, after the battle ended, I was shocked to see the videos documenting these violations. I bear witness before God to the righteousness of the Public Security Group—they were committed to protecting civilians. But Sheikh, we demanded justice. I am one of those who called for it. As a military officer and a member of the elite forces, I have insisted that those who committed these crimes—those who killed based on sectarian hatred—must be held accountable. Sheikh, we must purify our army. When mercenaries came from Libya and Nigeria, they did not fight as true mujahideen—they entered homes and slaughtered civilians. This is not the teaching of the Messenger of Allah. This is not our faith, nor our religion. This is not humanity. We are a people of mercy, a people of peace. We fight those who fight us. We take up arms only in battle. But we do not kill people who are simply living in their homes. No, by God, Sheikh—this is not why we fought. Sheikh, I appeal to you as Abu Obeida.
