Apparently there were only 3 GUARDS ON DUTY at the jail for 88 inmates during the time of the takeover. Yes, you read that right... three. >At 5:00 AM inmates at the Bertie-Martin Regional Detention Center in North Carolina began rioting. A few inmates overpowered two of the three guards and took control of the facility. The third guard escaped the jail and fled, while the other two guards are taken hostage. The inmates that overpowered the guards assaulted the on-duty staff and then seized large portions of the building. >At 9:30 AM, after hours of negotiation, the two hostage guards walk out and 18 inmates are also released with them. >9:50 AM. A second large group of inmates exits the facility. So far there have been no fatalities. There are currently TWENTY law enforcement agencies on the scene to try to re-take control of the jail. Video from April 7 shows Pauls Valley High School Principal Kirk Moore rushing toward the gunman and taking him down, as another staff member is seen removing the gun from the suspect, identified as Victor Hawkins. Reports were received from 9.21am of a man armed with what appeared to be a knife on Great Horton Road. He was detained by college security staff and arrested by attending officers. A man in his 30s has been arrested on suspicion of assaulting two members of the public and assaulting two emergency workers. He was also arrested for a racially-aggravated public order offence and causing damage to a police vehicle. The two injured members of the public have been taken to hospital for treatment for non-life-threatening injuries. A small gardening tool was seized by police at the scene. Detective Inspector Ailis Coates said: “We know that this incident will understandably cause some concern in the community. I would like to reassure people that the suspect was quickly detained by security staff and arrested by the police. “We understand that this incident has been witnessed by a large number of people and that some people may have filmed bits of it. We would ask them to please share this footage with the police as it could greatly assist us in our ongoing investigation. “We currently have a police scene in place on Great Horton Road and people can expect to see our neighbourhood policing colleagues in the area providing reassurance to college staff and students and the wider community.”

Earlier today, our officers who went to remove an illegal structure that was blocking a public road were violently attacked and beaten by mobilized goons behaving like criminals. As a result, four of our officers are currently being treated in hospital after sustaining serious head injuries. This kind of barbaric act is unacceptable and will not be tolerated under any circumstances. Let it also go on record that order and dignity cannot be compromised. Whenever we respond to complaints from members of the public, the same public must not turn against the very officers mandated to protect and serve them. We cannot live in a county where everyone believes the law should bend to their will. Let it be clearly understood assaulting county officers on duty is a grave offence, and we shall ensure that those who mobilized, aided, or participated in this attack are held fully accountable before the law.
