I yearn for the day we can just have these as normal machines that run locally inside the robot, you buy for the house and Google/Teslas MRR comes from selling parts, repairs, and optional services that don’t have to be cloud connected. The notion of a remotely controlled human sized bot inside my house sounds terrifying. Half of these products I see including Google glass 2.0 seem to lack that “privacy switch” the Google nest hubs 1.0 had. They gave me a huge peace of mind but there were definitely some rooms I still covered sensors on the device with physical tape (nest hub in bathroom). I’d like to see that same privacy and peace of mind thought go into new products too.

Late last year we published mimic-video and introduced Video-Action Models (VAM): a new family of robotics foundation models built on top of video generation models. We showed that robot control reduces to visual prediction, and that robot capability is downstream of improvements in video modeling accuracy. The obvious implication was that advances in the video modeling frontier would directly translate to increased capabilities in end-to-end robot learning. Modern robots are often designed to interact with our legacy world, whether it's a household, a factory, or a shipyard. That means they often need to work with existing machines, tools, and spaces. In short: retrofitting. Improving old machines with new technologies without major interference in their operation. Modern way of integrating things. You don't have to change the entire environment to deploy a robot. The robot will adapt, just as human would when freshly hired. The promise is to have an army of robots to help with the world designed for us. I also believe that general purpose robots, are not a direct competition for single purpose machines (like a highly efficient specialized packaging machine, for example). Excited to finally share Generative Value Learning (GVL), my Google DeepMind project on extracting universal value functions from long-context VLMs via in-context learning! We discovered a simple method to generate zero-shot and few-shot values for 300+ robot tasks and 50+ datasets using SOTA VLMs like Gemini (Try out the demo on our website on your robot video today!) I worked a lot on leveraging foundation models as guidance for robots in my PhD, and to me, this result forges a new frontier in how we can use foundation models for robot learning, given its broad applicability independent of embodiment and task types. Quite excited about how we can build on this work as a community!
