Awesome that no one died. Reminds me of Rommel’s Asparagus during WW2. In some cases they actually cushioned the landings of the gliders on D-Day.

Helicopter crashes almost always end up in total death and destruction. This is a miracle.

The tailboom of this 206 snapped at the bulkhead attachment.. most likely a maintenance issue.

I prefer my trips high above the ground to include wings. At least with a plane you have a chance at gliding in if you can keep the nose up. Scary. Glad it worked out for those onboard.

Besides an engine failure in a single engine helicopter, a stuck pedal is one of the more terrifying things that could happen in even in a twin engine machine. You have to think torque, big fan (main rotor) over your head producing lift. The fuselage/body suspended underneath (aka you) wants to spin in the opposite direction. So you have a tail rotor to counteract this force. In most helicopters, the main rotor spins counter-clockwise. So should you lose a tail rotor or have a stuck pedal, you slow down and see which way the fuselage wants to spin. If it wants to spin left, you have a left stuck pedal and if it wants to spin right, you have a right stuck pedal. Left stuck pedal is the more favorable of emergencies to happen. You can keep forward airspeed and land the helicopter kinda like an airplane because you’re applying torque with your collective to stay airborne. Right stuck pedal, the more torque you apply, the more it wants to spin in the opposite direction. Your only real option is to kill the torque, ie your engine and autorotate. You do have a couple advanced techniques to try but I’m not going to mention them here. I have trained my brain for such a scenario, land left and autorotate right. So if you slow down and the nose starts coming Left, you run it on to a runway. If the nose goes right, you autoRotate. This pilot had a load underneath him, a long line carrying something like a water bucket which he punched off. This was not an easy day for the pilot but they pulled off one of the worst case emergencies and will live to tell another tale. 🙏 Audio via ATC

Absolutely wild footage, this is a real world engine failure in a MD500 (Think Magnum P.I. helicopter) over Kauai, Hawaii out on a tour flight. You’ll probably have to watch this a few times but the video starts out with the helicopter under power and then the engine sound goes silent. The beeping you hear is the engine-out audio beep to inform the pilot that engine power has been lost. This maneuver that pilot is doing is called a Autorotation and the way to think about helicopter flight, the engine is turning this big fan (rotor blades) on top of the body and sucking in air from the top and projecting it downward to overcome the force of gravity. When engine power is lost, you experience a reverse in airflow because now gravity takes over and the air flow is coming from the bottom of the main rotor disk. The only thing the pilot can really do is to make sure the rotors keep spinning by changing the pitch of the rotor blades through the use of the “collective” which is a lever next to the pilot’s left leg and it only moves up and down. The pilot has to manipulate the collective during an auto rotation to make sure the blades keep spinning. If the pilot pulls up too much on the collective, the rotor blades will bite too much of air causing a resistance and slow the rotors down. If the pilot doesn’t pull enough collective.. the blades will speed up and potentially cause a catastrophic failure. The other control the pilot has is called the cyclic. This cyclic sits between the pilots legs and and manipulates individual pitch of the rotor blades to tilt the rotor disk aka “big fan” and make the helicopter go forward, backwards, left, right. So essentially in this type of emergency, you have to manipulate the controls in a delicate balance because no matter what, gravity is taking you to the ground because the engine is no longer producing power. The pilot did an outstanding job here given the geography and limited amount of flat terrain to put the helicopter on the ground. Thankfully it sounds like no souls were lost and only one injury according to a news report (see the link below)👇 Of course there is a lot more to helicopter aerodynamics but I’m trying my best to put this in simpler to digest terms. Big thanks to Combat Learjet for sharing and definitely worth a follow!

New footage shows the moments just before a Cessna 150 collided with a Pennsylvania State Police Bell 407 helicopter at Carlisle Airport on August 19, 2026. According to preliminary information, the PSP helicopter, N873ST, had arrived from Capital City Airport to conduct flight instruction exercises and was making a straight-in approach to Runway 28. Meanwhile, the Cessna 150H, N23330, entered the airport traffic pattern. The helicopter crew saw the Cessna both on TCAS and visually. Radio communications followed, with the helicopter instructor asking the Cessna pilot to extend his downwind. The pilot acknowledged and said he was number two for landing. But the sequence that followed was catastrophic. Security camera footage showed the Cessna crossing the runway threshold about 30 seconds after the helicopter. The aircraft flew low along the runway without touching down, with its wings rocking left and right and making several lateral and vertical movements. The helicopter had meanwhile transitioned into a hover taxi and moved about 50 ft north of the runway over a grass field. Its nose remained pointed toward the departure end of Runway 28. Critically, the helicopter crew said the approaching Cessna was behind them and outside their field of view. The Cessna then pitched up and climbed to roughly 1½ wingspans above the runway. Its right wing dropped and the aircraft turned before descending. Moments later, with the helicopter hovering off the runway, the Cessna rolled level, rapidly pitched up and collided with the rear of the Bell 407, striking the tail rotor and main rotor blades. Just eight seconds had passed since the helicopter exited the runway surface. The impact tore away the helicopter's main rotor blades and tail boom. The Cessna broke into multiple major sections and was destroyed. The Cessna pilot was fatally injured. Both commercial pilots aboard the Pennsylvania State Police helicopter were seriously injured. Post-accident examinations found no evidence of pre-impact mechanical failures that would have prevented normal operation of either aircraft. The wreckage and onboard avionics capable of recording digital data were recovered for further examination. The investigation continues.

Rory McIlroy says the way he beat his first-tee nerves was to picture the ball in the trees and walk the worst case all the way to its end. "I say this all the time. It's counterintuitive to a lot of people to do this, but I do. If you're trying to overcome anxiety or nerves or on performance, I do try to think about, well, what's the worst that could happen?" "I'm not gonna die on the golf course, thankfully." "I used to have, like, first tee nerves, like, big time. I would struggle on the first tee. And so I would say to myself, well, what's the worst that could happen?" "So if you hit it in the trees, okay, then what do you do? You go up there and you figure it out, you know, you're skillful enough to hit a punch shot out of the trees and, you know, get it up to the green and get it up and down and make a par and move on." "For whatever reason, imagining, like, the worst-case scenario, give me a level of comfort, because I felt like any worst-case scenario that I could bring up in my head, I'll be able to deal with." "Especially on the first tee for me... if you get nervous on the golf course, you get tight... it gives me a sense of freedom. And like, if I can swing free, that's when I play my best golf." "So whatever thought process I need to get into to get there, whether that's imagining the worst-case scenario." "I think I'm not standing behind a tee shot and visualizing myself hit a bad shot. Like, I'm visualizing myself hitting it where I want to. But I think just even before I get to that point, thinking, well, what's the worst that can happen?" "And then if the worst that can happen isn't that bad, it's like, well, that's okay. You'll be able to manage it." What I find wild is that he never once tries to calm himself down. He walks into the scary version instead, all the way through the punch shot and the par, and the nerves lose their grip because nothing is unknown anymore. The thing you are dreading shrinks the same way once its worst version has an ending you have already seen. - Rory McIlroy (Rory McIlroy) on The WHOOP Podcast (WHOOP)

Sam Parr made a video about us hanging out and what he learned from it: “The people who are the best in the world at what they do, they're not two or three times better than the second or third place, they're a 100 or a 1,000 times better. And I've seen this a bunch of times. The most recent example was the other day with my friend David Senra. He has this podcast called Founders. It's one of the biggest, best podcasts I've ever listened to. It's very popular. Tycoons listen to it and he's become friends with all these amazing people because of it. I was at his studio and he had four (five!) very high-end fancy cameras and the most beautiful, fancy set that I've ever seen. And most podcasters they record with just two DSLR cameras. And I was like, David did these four (five!) fancy cameras actually matter compared to the two normal cameras that everyone like me uses. And without skipping a beat he said: “I'm trying to be the best in the world. Everything matters.” And then he just carried on with the conversation. He wasn't performing. That wasn't a performative answer. And the second thing that I learned the other day with David, when you're around these people who have this energy where they just feel like they're going to take over the world: That's contagious. I know that’s contagious because I still feel that way after hanging out with David. It's Sunday now. I was with him on Friday. And so this is a reminder to go and hang out with the best people you can. It wears off on you.”
