Michael thinks the quote probably came from Steve Bannon, a known conspiracy theorist who makes wild and unsubstantiated claims on a regular basis. If Bannon came out and just said this under his own name, it wouldn't have been taken seriously. But because he laundered the accusation through a journalist, it is now taken as gospel. Moreover, Alex Acosta has denied that he ever had any knowledge that Epstein belonged to intelligence while being interviewed by government investigators. Can that really be it? Did this entire cultural phenomenon of the "Epstein Files" start because Bannon gave a journalist an anonymous quote? Yes, it's that stupid.
