🎥 New video report from CBC Canada explains how Sudan, now Africa’s third-largest gold producer, loses an estimated 50–70% of its gold to smuggling each year, largely to the UAE. Both warring sides depend on gold revenue, though the trade is especially central to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).... Led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, the RSF controls major gold sites in western Sudan and extracted an estimated $860 million worth of gold in 2024 alone, according to UN findings. That gold is funneled to the UAE, refined and sold globally, with weapons and supplies flowing back to the RSF. The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, also profit, moving gold through Egypt and onward to the UAE. The same countries now positioned as mediators of the Quad process—Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and the US—are deeply entangled in Sudan’s gold economy, complicating any serious path toward ending the war.show more
