In 2023, Ghana’s gold reserves were 8.78 tonnes since Nkrumah era but visionary Dr. Bawumia came up with the Gold Purchase programme which is a policy where the BOG buys gold locally from miners using cedis, then keeps that gold as part of the country’s official reserves. By December 2024, these reserves had risen from 8.78 tonnes since the inception of Ghana to 30.53 tonnes , meaning the NPPs strategy helped add 21.75 tonnes of gold. Dr. Bawumia introduced the gold Purchase programme to solve specific economic challenges facing Ghana; to stabilize the cedi, to build reserves without borrowing, to reduce reliance on external financing, to formalize small scale mining and stop smuggling etc. I’m glad yesterday, Sammy Gyamfi and Senyo Hosi applauded the visionary Dr.Bawumia for the Gold Purchase Programme which has been beneficial to GOLDBOD and Ghana at large.

Here in Boston and in several other U.S. states, I’ve met many Sudanese elites and intellectuals who express joy simply upon knowing that I am Emirati. I have participated in several events and celebrations with Sudanese brothers, and the only reason was because I am from the UAE. When I underwent several surgeries, many Sudanese visited me in the hospital, and I would hear them praise the development of the UAE and its leaders, especially Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan—may God protect him. They also expressed their love for the UAE’s founding father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan—may God have mercy on him—and their admiration for Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan is well known. Unfortunately, however, the Muslim Brotherhood in Sudan spreads lies and distorts the UAE’s humanitarian efforts in Sudan, even though the UAE spends billions of dollars to support the Sudanese people. The political fanaticism of the Muslim Brotherhood in Sudan drives them to lie and tarnish the UAE’s image. It is known, even globally, that the conflict over power in Sudan is between the Sudanese themselves: one side affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood, and the other independent—but in the end, both are Sudanese fighting for rule and authority. What has happened—these horrific crimes committed among Sudanese themselves—is truly heartbreaking and deeply saddening. But we must speak the truth: this tragedy occurred between Sudanese parties. Despite the horror of the situation, why do the Muslim Brotherhood continue to place the blame on the UAE? Some of the Brotherhood’s leaders in Sudan persist in insulting and verbally attacking the UAE and its leadership. I hope they reflect on their actions and develop a sense of fear and accountability before God Almighty, and that they stop spreading lies and false rumors. The situation in northern Ethiopia 🇪🇹 is rapidly worsening, with ENDF mobilizing massive reinforcements to Tigray, while Amhara Fano soldiers are taking over their region. 2 weeks after fighting erupted between federal forces and TPLF/TDF in Tigray, the Ethiopian government is in the process of mobilizing thousands of soldiers in the north. Abiy Ahmed has been preparing for war with Tigray and Eritrea for months, while part of his army is stuck fighting in the vast Amhara region, as you can see on the map (from Thomas van Linge). We recently learned about additional regional implications, with Ethiopia hosting a Rapid Support Forces base, while Sudan is training and hosting TPLF forces in Qadarif state and Somali rebels in Somalia. In northern Ethiopia, a climate of war is settling, with both TPLF, Eritrea and ENDF mobilizing their forces. At the same time, ENDF are leaving large areas of Amhara regions, which are rapidly falling into AFNM control. The Amhara Fano forces do not control any city yet but are threatening the main garrisons in the region, while a war in the north could allow them to walk on Addis Abeba.

Sudan and Russia agreed "on everything" regarding creating a Russian naval base in the country - foreign minister of Sudan during his visit to Russia. Russia is solely interested in protecting its own geopolitical interests (by building the naval base) and exploiting Sudan's resources to profit (selling weapons and diesel, illegal smuggling of gold). This is the essence of Russia's cooperation with other countries: Russia will only think of itself and will not hesitate to betray any partner at any point it deems convenient. Russia had planned to build a naval base in Sudan for a long time. After the fall of Assad's regime in Syria and access to local naval bases as good as lost, Russia has intensified contacts with Sudan on this matter. This issue has become increasingly important to Russia even before it lost access to Syria's naval bases, but especially in the current situation. Russian Mediterranean branch of the navy can't use the naval infrastructure in the Black Sea thanks to Ukraine's decisive efforts of making sure Russia's fleet is not welcome there. Furthermore, as of February 2022, Turkey has closed the Bosporus and Dardanelles straits for military shipping. Thus, the Mediterranean part of the Russian navy had to solely rely on the Tartus base in Syria - which is no longer an option. A naval base in Sudan would allow Russia to strengthen its naval presence on NATO's southern flank. And if Russia has naval bases in Libya and Sudan, it will be able to establish supply lines into the landlocked parts of Africa where Russian Africa Corps units are or might be in the future. Back in 2019, Russia and Sudan signed an agreement that would give Russian navy access to Sudanese ports. In December 2020, they signed the agreement for actually building the base - it would give Russia a naval base capable of hosting 300 personnel and four warships in Port Sudan for 25 years. The document was not ratified by Sudan's parliament. After a bit of back and forth, the project continued to remain on hold - until now. Despite repeated claims to support "activization of political and diplomatic efforts directed at establishing lasting peace" in Sudan, in November 2024, Russia vetoed a UN Security Council resolution that called for immediate ceasing of hostilities and delivering humanitarian aid to Sudan. All the other 14 members of the UN Security Council voted in favor of the resolution. There have also been repeated claims that Russia has been secretly funding both sides of the conflict in the war-torn Sudan. "Russia chose obstruction: standing alone as it voted to imperil civilians, while funding both sides of the conflict – yes, that's what I said: both sides" - the U.S. Ambassador to the U.N., Linda Thomas-Greenfield. This was confirmed by other experts. It is also important to note that Russia is the major weapons supplier to Sudan: about 87% of its weapon imports are Russian. To make matters worse, Russia has been illegally smuggling $13 billion worth gold out of Sudan per year (the country is one of the largest global gold exporters). In addition, Russia has been shipping diesel to Sudan despite EU and US sanctions. Sudan is currently in the middle of a civil war between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces. It is the least developed country and among one of the poorest countries in the world. The three suspects — Goutam Katriya, 35, Miraj Sarvaych, 22, Manash Damani, 42, are Indian nationals who are in the business of trading gold in Kumasi and Accra for Unique MM, a company allegedly owned by one Musah Salifu. The suspects were arrested at their private residence around Atinga Junction in Kumasi, which has been converted into a gold trading center. The arrest was based on a tip off from a patriotic whistle blower that the suspects were purchasing gold at “black market” rate for the purpose of smuggling. The suspects were arraigned before the Achimota Circuit court yesterday and remanded into custody for a period of two (2) weeks. At a press conference in Accra, the Director of Investigations at National Security, Chief Superintendent Osman Alhassan, disclosed that an amount of 1.9 million cedis, 4,500 rupees, 4.363 kilograms of gold, two counting machines, a CCTV recorder and an Indian passport were found in the possession of the suspects. Preliminary investigations by National Security so far revealed, that none of the three suspects possess a valid license that allows them to purchase or deal in gold in the country. The suspects who been dealing in gold in Ghana for over a decade, have not been able to adduce any residence permit or work permit or tax payment records on their business operations. Additionally, it’s been revealed that Musah Salifu, a Ghanaian, who is alleged to be the sole shareholder of the Unique MM, is only a front for Goutam Katriya, the real beneficial owner and alter ego of the company. Chief Superintendent Osman Alhassan cautioned both Ghanaians and foreign nationals against violating the provisions of the Ghana Gold Board Act and other laws governing the gold trading sector of the country. “This arrest is only the beginning of GoldBod’s ruthless war against illegal gold trading and gold smuggling. We know that the arrested suspects smuggle gold through unapproved border points into India. This has serious negative consequences for the Ghanaian economy.
