James Webb caught Chariklo’s rings changing in real time 🪨 Tiny worlds at the edge of the Solar System were supposed to wear their rings like quiet jewelry — stable, slow, almost frozen in time. Chariklo just proved otherwise. The James Webb Space Telescope has shown that this centaur’s two rings are evolving in opposite directions over just a few years. Chariklo is a hybrid body about 250 kilometers across, orbiting between Jupiter and Neptune. It has traits of both asteroids and comets. Discovered in 1997, it made headlines in 2013 when astronomers found two narrow, dense rings around it — a rarity for such a small object. Those rings are too thin and too far away to photograph directly, even with Webb. The only way to map them is a stellar occultation: when Chariklo briefly passes in front of a distant star, the rings dim the starlight, and that flicker reveals their structure. On October 18, 2022, researchers used Webb for the first stellar occultation that had been specifically predicted and planned for the telescope — and it worked. Chariklo was moving relative to Webb at only about 2.5 kilometers per second, giving an unusually sharp look at the rings. Compared with occultations from the past decade, the result was unexpected. The rings had barely moved. Their density had. The inner ring became much more opaque — roughly 50 percent more. The outer ring faded, with its signal dropping by about 60 percent. One ring looks like it is gaining material or grinding larger particles into finer dust. The other looks like it is losing material and may even be temporary. The cause is still unknown. It could be real evolution, a difference between infrared and earlier visible-light observations, or both. What is clear is that rings around small bodies are not static decorations. They can change fast. The observation itself is a milestone: the first planned occultation successfully captured by James Webb. It opens a new way to watch how rings form, evolve, and survive — not just around giant planets, but around the Solar System’s overlooked wanderers. 🪐
