NEWS: BYD has launched its next-generation battery energy storage system. It has a unit capacity of 14.5 MWh, the highest globally to date. The energy storage system achieves an ultra-large capacity of 10 MWh within a space equivalent to a 20-foot container, BYD said. For a 1 GWh storage...

You might want to give some context rather than these misleading marketing numbers direct from a breathless press release. They advertise high inverter efficiency whereas Tesla correctly gives system round trip efficiency. BYD’s number is akin to saying you’ve got really efficient transistors. Irrelevant. They boast a huge MWh number, but such a pack cannot be transported conventionally and/or will need to be assembled onsite. Tesla’s system is fully factory assembled and transportable. And so on. Comparing these ESS systems is complex and I don’t fault you for NOT doing the comparison since that’s better left to a true expert in the field (which there are very few), but rather than regurgitate PR numbers, maybe just say that BYD just released their answer to the Tesla Megablock and that there are several companies in this fast growing industry. BTW, Tesla is at a structural disadvantage to BYD and CATL in this industry since these competitors also manufacture battery cells which is by far the biggest cost item in ESS. However, Tesla has just started manufacturing their own cells for ESS (near GF-1 in Nevada), and probably has a lead in ESS systems architecture and software. Tesla will no doubt be leaning on their German Grohman subsidiary to build automation for LFP battery cell factories in Europe and China, which will be needed to compete in the coming years.

China ripped off Tesla, and will sell them with huge subsidies from the Chinese Communist Party. This is bad.

If anyone else than China buys this they are idiots! In case of a conflict with China, I’m sure they can switch it off remotely, harming the infrastructure in that country!

Is energy density a big concern with energy storage systems? I was under the impression that it was pretty far down the list of things to care about.

Is BYD going to make a humanoid robot too? Maybe open a diner?

Stop with the China propaganda. It’s always Tesla knock off tech attempting to imply they’re innovative. Plus none of this stuff really gets audited, it’s pumped and then we hear zero adoption or ghost sales.

BYD just launched the world’s most powerful storage unit: 14.5 MWh per box, LCOS < $0.014/kWh, 10,000+ cycles. They don’t just sell batteries anymore, they’re building energy sovereignty. The East doesn’t need your grid anymore. The West still needs its permits. 🔋 Storage is the new oil. 🧠 Who owns the energy protocol? → Thoughts? 👇 #JanusProtocol #BYD #EnergyWar

The comments are hilarious. I genuinely believe that for 80% of Sawyer’s readers this is the first time the penny dropped on Chinese battery manufacturers. It should be no surprise to anyone that if Tesla buys all their batteries from CATL or BYD eventually they can’t compete.

I wonder how heavy this will be to gave that much energy density? Could it exceed the weight for shipping and trucking? My understanding was this was a real limiting factor, the shipping unit maximum was something like 80k pounds.

I only remember BYD saying their cars can run on two wheels, but in reality, both quality and technology are terrible—don’t believe BYD’s propaganda lies.

We have been seeing these amazing battery advancements announced for several years, but nothing ever comes. If BYD can actually bring this to market, it will be a large hurdle for Tesla to overcome.

It's good to see new battery storage innovations announced. The key is always reliable, large-scale deployment, and Tesla has shown consistent leadership here with the Megapack. It will be interesting to see how these new systems perform in critical grid applications over time.

Does BYD have any different ideas other than copying everything Tesla does? 🤔 Chinese govt pours money in BYD so they can undercut tesla. What do they have in return? Imagine a car spy on people with its cameras is sold worldwide and send datas back to a cunning socialist govt

How long till wind towers are profitable without subsidies? I work in a field where we have to do heavy lift repairs and we have a competitor in the area and we stay hooked up. Cranes aren’t cheap…. There’s no way it’s profitable

NEWS: Neoen Australia says it has begun construction of a new $220 million big battery project, which will also be the first project in the world to deploy Tesla's new Megablock product, its next generation grid-scale battery tech. Megablock combines four Megapack 3 units into a single deployable block offering 20 MWh units, each with an integrated transformer and switchgear. Tesla says this will translate into faster installations and lower costs for grid-level storage, up to 40% cheaper. Megapack 3 production will begin at Tesla's upcoming Megafactory in Houston, Texas in 2026 with up to 50 GWh per year of manufacturing capacity. Megablock: • 23% faster to install with up to 40% lower construction costs • Plug and play platform (hardware, software and services) delivered as one all from Tesla. It's a pre-engineered medium-voltage block that integrates next-gen Megapack 3 • Eliminates above ground cabling between the transformer and the megapacks using new flexible busbar assembly • 91% MV round trip efficiency • 20 MWh of usable AC energy • Operates in temps of -40°C (-40°F) to 60°C (140°F) • 248 MWh per acre • 25-year life & >10,000 cycles Megapack 3: • 5 MWh of usable AC energy • Weight: 86,000 lbs • 28 foot long enclosure that can be shipped globally • Optimized for up to 8-hour applications • New drastically simplified thermal bay. Uses Model Y heat pump, but on steroids. 78% fewer connections, which minimizes failure points • Larger battery module and larger battery cell • 2.8 liter battery cell, co-engineered with Tesla's cell team • LFP battery • Operates in -40°C to 60° • Went from 24 cable connections in Megapack version 2XL, down to 3 simple busbar connections • 75% of the mass of Megapack 3 is battery cells. • A single module in it weighs as much as a Cybertruck • Tesla has enabled easier front access service, so there are no roof penetrations • Drastically simplified bussing system • Will partly use battery cells from Tesla's new 7 GWh LFP battery facility in Nevada. Additional cells sourced elsewhere.

BREAKING: The U.S. Government has officially announced that Tesla and LG Energy have signed an agreement to ‌build a $4.3 billion lithium iron phosphate (LFP) prismatic battery cell manufacturing factory in Lansing, Michigan, with a 2027 start of production. "American-made cells will power Tesla's Megapack 3 energy storage systems produced in Houston, creating a robust domestic battery supply chain," the U.S. Department of the Interior said in a statement. Here's everything you need to know about Tesla's new Megablock, the latest in the company's industrial storage product lineup, which includes the new Megapack version 3: Megablock: • 23% faster to install with up to 40% lower construction costs • Plug and play platform (hardware, software and services) delivered as one all from Tesla.
