I’ll be right there… I’m new at this! One of the most amazing things about being a parent is that there are new and special moments at every stage of development (right into adolescence and adulthood). But what a special time it is when babies emerge into toddlerhood - developing motor and language skills all at once. This little one, shared to IG by jamesandersonw10, is hitting these developmental milestones right and left, taking some of her first tentative steps while using language (which sounds very much like “coming!” - but could well be an effort to mimic dad’s “come on”), to cheer herself on. Talk about putting it all together! 🧩

If you’ve ever had a toddler, you can probably guess where this conversation is “headed!” 😀 Young children are famous for their literal thinking - which is largely a function of their emergent language learning. Put simply, as we learn words, it takes time and exposure to understand that many have multiple meanings. Our language is, likewise, chock full of expressions and metaphors the meaning of which can be quite different from what their literal interpretation might entail. So when you ask a toddler to “face the table,” don’t be surprised when you get a result that looks something like this. So great! This adorably compliant little one was posted to IG by melwire.

It is with overwhelming sadness, that this morning I had to make the heartbreaking decision to put my darling Connie to sleep Her swift demise at such a young age was unbearable Her first few years on a cruel puppy farm, were ended when she came to live with me and David Her short time here was truly her paradise, I will try and remember this way. “Cookie?” 🍪 As your toddler advances as a language user, you may notice that sometimes one word can take on the meaning of an entire phrase or sentence. These are known as holophrases and this video, shared to IG by markvanness is a perfect (and comical) example. In this case, it turns out that “cookie?” doesn’t mean “Would you like a cookie?” - but rather “Hey, do you see this cookie I’m about to eat?” There’s really nothing funnier than parenting a toddler. 🤣

It never fails. After months of late night feedings and short bursts of sleep, your baby FINALLY begins sleeping through the night… only to begin waking again. What gives? What you’re experiencing is a sleep regression… a small setback in sleep continuity often associated with big breakthroughs in development. As your baby grows as a language user, for example, you may find that they discover 3am is a great time to practice all their new skills. This happy little guy, shared to TT by em_suttles, is a great example. He’s unlocked a cool new vocal trick (at 5 months) and he’s ready to put it to work. While it may not yet look like it, he’s on his way to spoken language. Even more pronounced regressions can coincide with major motor milestones. As your baby learns to sit, roll over, crawl and pull to a stand, their nighttime options in the crib become far more varied. And the temptation to practice them can be strong. The good news is that these sleep regressions are typically pretty short lived. So, bleary-eyed though you may be, do your best to celebrate them for what they are: markers of big steps forward in your child’s development.

Another - beautifully displayed in this video clip shared to FB by Anne Frankenhsuser - is prosody, which relates to the unique rhythms and patterns of each specific language. It’s “musicality” if you will. Rosie passed on Saturday 4 weeks ago Rose had surgery that resulted in her cancer coming out of remission. By last Saturday her little body was very close to having enough - with rapidly expanding tumours all over her rear end She was in pain and starting to become a different dog to the one I knew and loved On Saturday, I made the very sad decision to put Rose to sleep It was the hardest decision of my life and Rose fought all the way to the end. In a sad way she made me so proud In the truest sense of the word: Rose was a pioneer. It is my hope that her contribution will lead to many people never having to face what I had to go through on Saturday - both humans and pets alike I buried her with help from friends and family and she will be sorely missed please send her your thoughts or prayers love Paul

This woman was going out and decided to pull into a dark road on the side of the highway that doesn’t get much traffic. She pulls her car over and gets sets up a camera and gets out so that she could do a “fit check” to make sure her outfit looks nice. There was a man who was walking away from her, as soon as she turned her back, he turned around and started walking towards her. She should have been more aware of what was happening around her. I think the man was hoping she would stick around longer, that’s why he turned back around. Wouldn’t you pick a more busy place to do something like this instead of a remote road away from traffic. In college sometimes I was working some odd jobs to make ends meet so I didn’t have to take out a loan. That meant sometimes I was walking back to the apartment at night, most of the time it was busy and there were people still walking around in the middle of the night, getting food or trying to make it home. It was a colder night than usual, the fall goat was warning me that winter was coming. Colder nights meant less people out and about. On the way home I was going to swing by the corner store to grab something to eat so I wouldn’t have to cook. As I was walking out I saw that there were a group of people at the corner, just hanging out and having a smoke, it was dark and I couldn’t see how many there was. I turned around and went back into the store. I let the clerk know and he looked out to see what was going on and he saw them too. He said to be careful because sometimes gang members like to hang out by that corner. I couldn’t call the police because they technically weren’t doing anything but I wasn’t about to find out either. I ended up waiting until they left about 15 minutes later.c then I proceeded to walk home, but not without looking behind me to make sure I wasn’t being followed.

Last night, at my friend Mike Wilkerson’s wedding at Mar-a-Lago, the President showed up. Infant sleep can be such a tricky thing. Just as soon as you get reaccustomed to resting through the night, all of a sudden your baby reverts to waking multiple times a night. Welcome to the 8 month sleep regression. Interruptions in sleep patterns often coincide with the development of new skills and somewhere around 8 months you’re due for the biggest of them all. That’s because your baby is becoming mobile - and putting all the skills together to roll, crawl, and even pull to a stand in their crib. For infants this is a HUGE breakthrough. Imagine having spent your entire life mostly stationary, with your ability to pursue your own interests - or even adjust your view - subject to the whims of a caregiver. Somewhere between 6-9 months most babies begin discovering a host of new abilities. And let’s face it, some of them are a lot more entertaining than sleep. The good news (at 3am) is that the novelty here is temporary…but there are some important ways you can help your baby to navigate this period safely. Perhaps the most important one is illustrated in this video. And that’s adjusting the height of your child’s crib mattress to its lowest level. With newborns and immobile infants, it’s often convenient to elevate their mattress so they can be placed into and retrieved from the crib more easily. But when your baby begins pulling to a stand it’s critical that you lower their mattress to prevent accidental falls. Babies are top heavy and can easily go tumbling out without such adjustments. You may also find that your baby masters pulling to a stand faster than they master sitting back down - which can create a crib dilemma and a need for assistance. You can navigate through this phase more quickly by providing lots of wakeful practice in both standing and sitting, which may involve gently guiding your little one to bend their legs at the knee - or even placing an appealing toy on the ground near their feet to incentivize sitting back down. As for the sleep regression, it’ll be over before you know it. And while it can be frustrating in the middle of the night, think of it as a breakthrough.
