“Night-night!” Take a peek at this masterful little communicator. She technically says only one thing… but manages to carry on an entire conversation filled with intent and meaning. Last week I wrote a little about receptive language (the ability to understand words spoken to you) as a precursor to... expressive (or spoken) language. It’s clear that this little one is about to explode into the latter. And check out all the heavy lifting that “night-night” does here… meaning at least three different things as the conversation progresses. First it means, “Hey, I really need to go to sleep now. Will you please put me to bed?” (Which, by the way, is incredibly self aware at her age.) Next it means, “Yes, that’s correct. I need to go night-night.” Finally it means, “Goodnight! See you when I wake up.” All of these different meanings are reinforced by her body language, nods, and tone of voice. Such a cool exchange - and window on her budding language development. I’ll be right there… I’m new at this! One of the most amazing things about being a parent is that there are new and special moments at every stage of development (right into adolescence and adulthood). But what a special time it is when babies emerge into toddlerhood - developing motor and language skills all at once. This little one, shared to IG by jamesandersonw10, is hitting these developmental milestones right and left, taking some of her first tentative steps while using language (which sounds very much like “coming!” - but could well be an effort to mimic dad’s “come on”), to cheer herself on. Put simply, as we learn words, it takes time and exposure to understand that many have multiple meanings. Rosie passed on Saturday 4 weeks ago Rose had surgery that resulted in her cancer coming out of remission. By last Saturday her little body was very close to having enough - with rapidly expanding tumours all over her rear end She was in pain and starting to become a different dog to the one I knew and loved On Saturday, I made the very sad decision to put Rose to sleep It was the hardest decision of my life and Rose fought all the way to the end. In a sad way she made me so proud In the truest sense of the word: Rose was a pioneer. This woman was going out and decided to pull into a dark road on the side of the highway that doesn’t get much traffic. She pulls her car over and gets sets up a camera and gets out so that she could do a “fit check” to make sure her outfit looks nice. There was a man who was walking away from her, as soon as she turned her back, he turned around and started walking towards her. She should have been more aware of what was happening around her. I think the man was hoping she would stick around longer, that’s why he turned back around. Wouldn’t you pick a more busy place to do something like this instead of a remote road away from traffic. In college sometimes I was working some odd jobs to make ends meet so I didn’t have to take out a loan. That meant sometimes I was walking back to the apartment at night, most of the time it was busy and there were people still walking around in the middle of the night, getting food or trying to make it home. It was a colder night than usual, the fall goat was warning me that winter was coming. Colder nights meant less people out and about. On the way home I was going to swing by the corner store to grab something to eat so I wouldn’t have to cook. As I was walking out I saw that there were a group of people at the corner, just hanging out and having a smoke, it was dark and I couldn’t see how many there was. I turned around and went back into the store. I let the clerk know and he looked out to see what was going on and he saw them too. He said to be careful because sometimes gang members like to hang out by that corner. I couldn’t call the police because they technically weren’t doing anything but I wasn’t about to find out either. Infant sleep can be such a tricky thing. Just as soon as you get reaccustomed to resting through the night, all of a sudden your baby reverts to waking multiple times a night. Welcome to the 8 month sleep regression. Interruptions in sleep patterns often coincide with the development of new skills and somewhere around 8 months you’re due for the biggest of them all. That’s because your baby is becoming mobile - and putting all the skills together to roll, crawl, and even pull to a stand in their crib. For infants this is a HUGE breakthrough. Imagine having spent your entire life mostly stationary, with your ability to pursue your own interests - or even adjust your view - subject to the whims of a caregiver. Somewhere between 6-9 months most babies begin discovering a host of new abilities. And let’s face it, some of them are a lot more entertaining than sleep. The good news (at 3am) is that the novelty here is temporary…but there are some important ways you can help your baby to navigate this period safely. Perhaps the most important one is illustrated in this video. And that’s adjusting the height of your child’s crib mattress to its lowest level. With newborns and immobile infants, it’s often convenient to elevate their mattress so they can be placed into and retrieved from the crib more easily. But when your baby begins pulling to a stand it’s critical that you lower their mattress to prevent accidental falls. Babies are top heavy and can easily go tumbling out without such adjustments. You may also find that your baby masters pulling to a stand faster than they master sitting back down - which can create a crib dilemma and a need for assistance.
