Nintendo might be charging for 'Switch 2 Editions' but the firm has also released a range of FREE upgrade patches for key Switch 1 games running on the new console - and the results are superb. Oliver Mackenzie and John Linneman compare notes:

@oliemack @dark1x It goes to show how starved we were for games to just run well when it’s obvious that the Switch 2’s best feature is that it’s able to run games that are several years old at a respectable resolution/frame rate.

@oliemack @dark1x The free updates are really good, on games like tears of the kingdom, nino kuni 2, super mario odyssey are just so smooth, however i think they should uncap the games capped to 30fps on switch 2

@oliemack @dark1x DF says 30fps is a choice for developers and praises some that run at that rate. Yet, every game with a 60fps patch is praised as being transformative.

@oliemack @dark1x Seeing that the Switch 2 is capable of running Splatoon 3 at 4K even in areas where the Switch 1 ran at 810p, and maintaining 60fps in the lobby when the Switch 1 ran at 30fps, makes me think that Nintendo could have easily put a 1080p/120fps mode in the game if they wanted to.

@oliemack @dark1x The free updates have been a highlight and I hope we see a lot more. Even just getting native res in handheld mode. I would love to see Metroid prime remaster, Metroid dread, fire emblem engage, fire emblem three houses, all the xenoblades, pikmin 3 (still 720p), and pikmin 4
