Meyer just told me that a growing number of scientists are admitting the theory of evolution is not enough to explain humanity’s origins. And they’re opening up to the theory of intelligent design. So I asked him: why has there been such incredible hostility towards the theory of intelligent design? Stephen Kotkin argues that a leftist revolution was inevitable in Russia in 1917. Why? The peasantry. Other European countries had leftist uprisings in cities. But rural, traditional forces of order were always able to put them down. In Russia, by contrast, the peasants had no reason to support the tsarist regime. By 1917 there were near-constant peasant uprisings and revolts. This created a massive opportunity for leftists in cities, which Lenin exploited. The tragedy is that the peasants' radicalism helped create the Soviet regime that would later starve and kill millions of them.

There are hundreds of millions or billions of Earth-like planets in the Milky Way. But we don't see hundreds of millions of alien civilisations. This suggests there's a bottleneck to the emergence of spacefaring civilisations. A common view is that the bottleneck is the emergence of life itself. But Nick Lane believes that life is actually nearly inevitable on any Earth-like planet. The real bottleneck, he says, is endosymbiosis. He argues that something like mitochondria are necessary for complex multicellular organisms. But to develop mitochondria, one simple cell needs to fully engulf another cell, and the two need to stay linked together even as they reproduce. Modelling shows that evolution will usually discourage this kind of endosymbiosis. And complex cells like ours have only developed once in the history of life on Earth. If Nick's right, simple life is probably abundant across the galaxy, but complex life might only exist on earth.

They say the matter will be dealt with in a week or so... 920 asylum seekers reside in the Breaffy complex. There's hundreds more in a retail park close by. The population of the town has more than doubled. It is rumoured the government will be making Breffy complex into a permanent IPAS reception centre and that Palestinians are being brought in. What is the answer here? What are communities meant to do? There is all sorts of unsettling activities happening in and around this complex...including criminal and seedy activity. Irish towns, once beautiful tourist destinations, are turning into ghettos.
