These were called jet injectors. They administered the vaccine through a high-pressure narrow jet of the vaccine liquid, penetrating the skin to deliver the vaccine without a needle. They were especially useful in scenarios where rapid, large-scale immunization was necessary. The use of jet injectors largely declined due to concerns about the potential for cross-contamination between patients and the challenges in maintaining the sterility of the device. There were fears that blood-borne pathogens could be transmitted if the injector was not properly cleaned between uses.
