Obsidian Web Clipper now lets you manage highlights, and stays in Reader mode when you click links. It's such a pleasant way to browse the web. You can control the colors, fonts, and easily copy anything to Markdown.

Thanks for WC, it works amazing. One thing that I miss is an option to include article comments in the clipped file. For pages like the one in the screenshot, optionally include the id="comments" block as well.

I am already moving in this direction, yes. I already added comment support for some sites e.g. social networks, Reddit, and Hacker News.

@obsdmd Steph what’s the best way to clip X articles on mobile?

@obsdmd it's built into the share sheet in the next version of Obsidian in the meantime you have to open the web URL for the article and use Web Clipper

I would really love to use it, but unfortunately, shortcuts don't work in the Arc browser. 😢

well Arc is Arc 🤷♂️ but there's other ways to access those features via the buttons and context menu

Love how much use I’m getting out of this. Personal wiki is so easy to maintain in real-time with WC. Thanks for all the rad tools. 🙏

@obsdmd My dream is to ditch thr browser and just live inside obsidian

@obsdmd have you tried Web Viewer?

@obsdmd Yes amazing plugin

highlight management in the clipper changes the whole research workflow

This is great! Love all the recent updates. By any chance, does Web Clipper work as a "Share via" option in iOS mobile apps? I noticed it works in iOS Safari as an extension.

No. Obsidian Web Clipper is a Safari browser extension, not a share sheet extension. They're separate things. However Obsidian also has a native iOS share extension that will be significantly improved in the next Obsidian version.

Wow! That's great news!

@dSebastien Does web clipper support batch intake of sources to clip in an automated way?

@dSebastien I built the underlying defuddle CLI for this

What keyboard combination are you pressing to get the "cross hair" mouse icon? Plus, I cannot seem to select "blocks" of text. I can only drag and select stuff. Finally, when I tried to select mathematical equations, everything else got clipped minus the formulas. Any idea why that might be the case. On MacOS and using Chrome (Clipper 1.6.1)

In Reader mode it's just H

Does the Obsidian app on iOS act as a web clipper? If it doesn't, can it in the future?

Obsidian Web Clipper is available on iOS

Beautiful! Bless you, thank you.

staying in Reader mode across link clicks is such a small thing that changes everything.

It doesn’t work when I paste the link into defuddle.md after copying it from the Reddit app’s share sheet. Maybe it’s a redirect link. Is there a way to fix it without opening the link in the browser?

I'm not sure I understand. This is a demo of Obsidian Web Clipper, which is a browser extension:

My use case: when I share a Reddit post link from the Android app to my read-it-later app, it should call the Defuddle API with that link. But, it doesn’t work. For example: Is there a workaround? Btw, I’ve been using the extension for quite some time

that's fixed now

Have you ever published an explainer on how you personally use Obsidian? If so, have you updated it for the more recent tools launched (Obsidian CLI, Reader, etc)?

yes

Thanks. I'll give it a read

我已经离不开Obsidian Web Clipper

feels like I don’t need my readwise subscription anymore

Very nice. The Reader mode persistence across link-clicks is the one I didn't know I needed; my ingest loop used to break whenever I followed a citation. Highlights management finally makes clipping feel like a workflow instead of a hoarding habit.

How do you get the crosshair clipping to appear when you cipped the table at 0:38s? it seems there is no such option. Thanks

turn on highlighter mode

Thanks. I did and even used the same webpage in reader mode but i dont get the crosshair and i cant select a table like in the video with a single click. Using Chrome Canary on MacOS

Highlighter has to be turned on. You can click the highlighter button in the top right corner of Reader.

i absolutely adore web clipper and use it every single day

This looks real nice. I tried the reader on this doc page in obsidian and got this though:

will fix

is there a way to only save to obsidian what I highlighted? it always saves the entire page

Yes, use the {{highlights}} variable, it's documented here:

thank you so much, it works this is so good for researching

The obsidian WebClipper is just amazing! Thanks

@kepano my Firefox web clipper extension is stuck on v1.3.0. Missing out on so many features. Tried reinstalling but doesn't update. Am I missing a step?

I always submit new versions to all stores at the same time but Firefox takes 2-3 weeks longer to approve. There's nothing I can do to make it go faster. see

Wow didn't realize it was that slow compared to Chrome. Thanks for the transparency!

I just installed it and I can say that is an extraordinary tool. Thank you very much !

Is there a way to prevent my annotations (entered directly in the web clipper dialog) from being overwritten when i make new highlights? I’m using {{highlights|map:item => item.text|list}}

in the future I plan to add a way you can annotate highlights inline to make that workflow a lot smoother

Oh nice. I’m using for pages that require a lot of annotation, but would ideally like to cut that dependency and just do it locally.

Wow. Y'all ain't fucking around. LOVE THIS!!

I am completely in love with Obsidian Web Clipper. Thanks to the whole team!

Just learned about Web Clipper today, really cool stuff

@obsdmd Is there an option to not open a link in reader mode by default because it messes up stuff like an instagram link etc

@obsdmd you can open it in a new tab, or click and then exit reader

Also, is there a way to open the highlighter using keyboard shortcut? TBH it would actually be preferable if there was a way to capture the highlights automatically in a note inside the Vault

I was asking about this a week or so ago and it's here! Amazing!

This is HOLY SHIT level

definitely nice method to browse the web page.

How to save the highlights into local vault?

I can't wait to try this! I've been a @RoamResearch guy, but will be giving @obsdmd a try ASAP! I'm nudged by the fact I can use local markdown files, which will hopefully help me realize my dream of using agents to help me manage my corpus, reveal connections semantically, etc.

Was blown away that I can get all the desktop functionality on my phone. Your great work would kill a bunch of subscriptions for good ser.
