So I think our judgment is just off." Gergely: "Does this have to do that when I’m making a hack as an engineer, pre-AI, I know I'm making a hack. I'm thinking about it, I feel bad about it... there's kind of like a little bit of prickle there. Is it just that the agents just do it? Important reality check from WashPost's Josh Rogin about the age/condition of govt planes during after AF1 had electrical issues and turned around instead of continuing its flight to Davos.... "Over the course of 20 years of traveling on government aircraft, this happens all the time. You know, it's a really old fleet and there's a constant state of disrepair. It's much more rare for Air Force One than it is for like the planes that the vice president and the secretary of defense, the secretary of state, might fly on. But these things happen, and it's because the planes are very, very old. And so, I think the fact that they caught it early and they turned back, it shouldn't really be a big problem. But it is kind of shocking to people who don't know, but it's kind of an open secret amongst the reporters who travel with senior officials that the U.S. fleet is very old and the planes are not in good condition, and that doesn't justify taking a plane from Qatar for free or anything like that. But it's just kind of a thing that everybody knows that these are really old planes and they malfunction all the time. So, they caught it. They're going to go back, they're going to get on a couple other planes. They'll be a little late. It'll probably be okay, and they'll fix the plane. But these things happen because the U.S. government fleet is very, very old and these planes are very, very old."

"If you have ambitions to be a Professor at Yale, Harvard, or one of these big institutions, the way you do that is mostly by getting funding for research. It's by getting a lot of publishing - a lot flying around the world to talk about something. You need all of these things to bolster your reputation as an international expert in this area. Now, the best way to do that, at least in psychiatry but I suspect in other areas of medicine, is actually to collaborate with pharmaceutical companies to run clinical trials. They write the publications for you - most of it, they do a lot of the grunt work, they give you the protocols, and then, essentially, they fund you and fly you around the place. I used to remember, as a junior doctor, looking up to the Professors. And they would say, 'These drugs are safe and effective. There's not a lot of problems there.' ...What I've seen more and more is that they've been compromised, and that they have incentives tied to the money and to career advancement. That means that they can't be as forthright as they ought to be about these things. And it's gotten to a problem where these are the Professors who are training the doctors who are setting the tone for what is acceptable care out there. There are 2 categories of things in this world: 1) Things that are up to you 2) Things that are not up to you Which category does your reputation sit in? Your reputation is not up to you. I'm the one who associates your reputation with something, not you. You just do things. What's up to you? How you act. Your decisions. Your actions. That is up to you. Your reputation is not up to you. Here's how I know that: You all have a reputation about me and it's not in my control. I get to say and do whatever I say and do up here. I am in control of saying it. I am in control of doing it. The moment words leave my lips, who has control over what is done with those words? You! You are in control of what you think of me. Steve Jobs on how he learned to run a company: Question: "You're 21. You're a big success. You know, you've just sort of done it by the seat of your pants. You don't have any particular training in this. How do you learn to run a company?" Steve Jobs: "You know, throughout the years in business, I found something, which was that I always ask why you do things. And the answers you invariably get are, oh, that's just the way it's done. When we got into a factory in the Apple II days, the accounting had this notion of a standard cost, where you'd kind of set a standard cost and at the end of a quarter you'd adjust it with a variance. And I kept asking, well, why do we do this? And the answer was, well, that's just the way it's done. And after about six months of digging into this, what I realized was the reason you do it is because you don't really have good enough controls to know how much it costs. So you guess, and then you fix your guess at the end of the quarter. And the reason you don't know how much it costs is because your information systems aren't good enough. But nobody said it that way. And so later on, when we designed this automated factory for Macintosh, we were able to get rid of a lot of these antiquated concepts and know exactly what something cost to the second. So in business, a lot of things are, I call it folklore. They're done because they were done yesterday and the day before. And so what that means is if you're willing to sort of ask a lot of questions and think about things and work really hard, you can learn business pretty fast. It's not the hardest thing in the world. It's not rocket science. It's not rocket science."
