One million regular blood donors are needed to help Britain avoid its first ever "red alert" blood shortage crisis. There is also a "critical" need for more donors who have the so-called universal blood type - O negative blood, which is needed for treatment in emergencies. Nick Dixon reports.

appts used to be quick to get, close to home or work and at convenient times Just tried to get an appt in Lpool and times were 830 to 330 over 4 different days in June! Had to wait until Sept for appointment I could attend as don’t drive. What happened to blood bus attending work

Used to be a regular donator, now it’s a 6 hour round trip via public transport to Plymouth. Bring back the local donation centres.

They only have a few bags left “So to put into perspective how high the need for blood is right now, take a look at our drawers here. This is where we store our O negative blood, which is the universal blood donor. This whole drawer is empty and only have this much O-negative in our other drawer. So O-negative is used really commonly in the hospitals and we really need these to be stocked. This just goes to show you how high the need really is right now.”
